Inflatable Boat Insurance in Australia: What It Costs and What Actually Gets Covered

Most insurers price a boat off its hull value and where it lives. An inflatable that stores in your garage and has no trailer changes both. Here is what to ask for, what gets excluded, and the paperwork you need.

Boat insurance is the part of ownership nobody researches until something has already gone wrong. With an inflatable it is worth ten minutes up front, because the way insurers price and exclude fabric-hulled boats is not the same as a tinny on a trailer.

Nothing here is financial advice. Policies differ enormously between insurers — read the Product Disclosure Statement and confirm the detail with your own insurer or broker before you rely on any of it.

Do you legally need it?

No. There is no compulsory insurance requirement for recreational vessels in Australia the way there is for cars. Registration is a legal requirement; insurance is your decision.

Two things change that in practice:

  • Third-party liability. If your boat damages someone else's hull, a marina pontoon or a moored yacht, you pay. That figure has no ceiling and it is the real reason to hold a policy.
  • Marina and club access. Many berths, clubs, ramps and events require proof of third-party cover before you get in.

The three levels of cover

Third-party liability onlyPays for damage you cause to other people's property and injury claimsOwners happy to carry the risk on their own boat
Third-party plus theftAdds theft of the boat, motor and gearOwners storing at home or in shared storage
ComprehensiveAdds accidental damage, storm damage, sinking, fire and usually transitMost boat-plus-motor owners

What actually drives your premium

Hull value, not length. A A$5,000 boat is priced very differently from a A$50,000 one. This is where an inflatable comes out well: the total insured value of a catamaran plus a small four-stroke is modest by boating standards.

Where it is kept. Insurers care a great deal. A boat that deflates into a bag and lives inside a locked garage is a materially lower theft and storm risk than one sitting on a trailer in the driveway or on a public street. Say so when you get the quote — it is a genuine argument for a lower premium and people forget to make it.

No trailer. Trailer theft and trailer-related road damage are common claim categories. If there is no trailer, that whole class of risk disappears from your policy.

Operating area. Enclosed waters, coastal within a stated distance, or offshore. Cover almost always has a geographic limit, and it is one of the most frequently breached conditions.

Motor value. The outboard is often worth a meaningful share of the total. Make sure it is listed with its make, model and serial number, not just lumped in.

The exclusions that catch inflatable owners

Read these clauses specifically:

  • Wear, tear, UV and gradual deterioration. No policy covers fabric ageing. That is what a hull warranty is for, and it is why fabric weight matters: our Viper hulls are 1500 GSM / 1.2mm VALMEX® Heavy Plus with a 7-year hull warranty, AeroCat hulls are 1100 GSM / 0.9mm VALMEX® with 5 years. Premium VALMEX has a working life of 10–12 years in Australian sun and salt.
  • Damage while inflated and unattended on a beach. Some policies restrict cover to when the vessel is in use, in transit, or in secure storage.
  • Over-powering. Fitting a motor above the maximum horsepower on the builder's plate can void a claim outright. Every one of our boats states its rating; stay inside it.
  • Unlicensed or unregistered operation. If your rego or licence lapsed, expect the claim to be argued.
  • Gear and accessories. Sounders, batteries, safety gear and launch wheels are often capped or excluded unless itemised.

Documents to have ready

Insurers ask for the same things a registration authority does, and having them on hand shortens the whole process:

  • Hull Identification Number (HIN) — supplied with your boat
  • Tax invoice showing the purchase price
  • Builder's plate details — length, maximum persons, maximum horsepower
  • CE certification — our catamarans are certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU
  • Motor invoice with serial number

They all ship in your welcome pack. If you cannot find something, email sales@easyinflatables.com.au and we will resend it.

Practical ways to reduce the premium

  1. Store it deflated, inside, and tell the insurer that is what you do.
  2. Insure the boat and motor for a realistic replacement value — over-insuring costs you every year and pays you nothing extra.
  3. Ask for an agreed-value policy rather than market value on a newer boat.
  4. Keep registration current; a lapse is an easy reason to reduce a payout.
  5. Photograph the boat, motor serial and HIN once a year and keep the file with your invoice.

The honest summary

An inflatable catamaran is one of the cheaper boats in Australia to insure, for the same reasons it is cheaper to own: low hull value, no trailer, and it sleeps in your garage rather than on the street. Get third-party liability at a minimum. Then decide how much of your own boat's risk you want to carry.

Built to last. Made to explore.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need insurance for an inflatable boat in Australia?
It is not legally compulsory for recreational vessels, unlike car insurance. Registration is the legal requirement. Most owners still hold at least third-party liability cover, because damage you cause to another boat or a marina has no upper limit, and many clubs and berths require proof of it.
How much does it cost to insure an inflatable boat?
Premiums are driven mainly by the insured value of the hull and motor, where the boat is stored and your operating area — not by the fact that it is inflatable. A modestly valued catamaran that stores deflated in a locked garage with no trailer sits at the low-risk end of most insurers' pricing.
Does boat insurance cover fabric wear and UV damage?
No. Every policy excludes wear, tear, UV and gradual deterioration. That risk is covered by the hull warranty instead — 7 years on our Viper series (1500 GSM / 1.2mm VALMEX Heavy Plus) and 5 years on the AeroCat series (1100 GSM / 0.9mm VALMEX).
What can void an inflatable boat insurance claim?
The common ones are fitting a motor above the maximum horsepower on the builder's plate, operating outside the geographic area stated in the policy, and lapsed registration or licence. Check those three clauses before you sign.
What documents does an insurer ask for?
Typically the Hull Identification Number, your tax invoice, builder's plate details (length, maximum persons, maximum horsepower), CE certification and the motor invoice with serial number. All of these are supplied in your welcome pack when your boat is delivered.
