There are few things more exciting for a boating enthusiast than unboxing a brand-new vessel. The smell of fresh VALMEX fabric, the promise of remote beaches and glassy estuaries—it's all there, packed neatly in a box. But between the courier dropping it on your driveway and your first triumphant day on the water lies a critical process: commissioning. This isn't just about blowing it up and hoping for the best. To commission a boat is to prepare and test it methodically, ensuring every component is working perfectly for maximum safety, performance, and longevity.

This guide is the definitive Australian resource for that process. It's written for owners of high-quality inflatable boats, particularly catamarans like our Aerowave Viper and AeroCat models, but the principles apply to any premium inflatable tender. Unboxing and Initial Inspection: Your First Quality Check

A proper commissioning starts before you even reach for the pump. Your new inflatable has travelled a long way to get to you—either by Express Air in 7–14 days or our popular free Economy Sea Freight (30–40 days). The first step is a careful inspection.

Find a clean, clear area free of sharp objects—a garage floor, a grassy lawn, or a large tarp is ideal. Unpack all the contents and lay them out. You should have:

  • The main inflatable hull (the tubes and integrated floor)
  • The high-pressure air deck floor (if separate)
  • Aluminium floor stringers or supports (model dependent)
  • Oars/paddles
  • Seats (aluminium or inflatable)
  • High-pressure pump (hand or foot operated)
  • Repair kit (glue, patches, valve tool)
  • Carry bags
  • Transom plate/pad (if separate)

Before you inflate anything, perform a close visual inspection of the boat's main body. You are looking for any signs of transport damage, which is extremely rare but worth checking. More importantly, you're familiarising yourself with the boat's features. Run your hand along the seams. On a premium boat made from German VALMEX® fabric, like our 1.2mm, 1500 GSM Viper 400 Sovereign, the welds should be flawless—flat, consistent, and without any visible glue excess or imperfections. This is the difference between a boat built to last over a decade and one that might give you trouble in a few seasons.

Check the valves. They should be clean and free of debris. Note their type (likely Halkey-Roberts or a similar high-pressure design) and check the number of chambers. Our catamarans have multiple chambers for safety, and it's good practice to know which valve inflates which part of the boat.




Inflation Strategy: It's More Than Just Air

Correct inflation is the single most important part of setting up your new inflatable boat. An under-inflated boat will flex, perform poorly, and put stress on the transom and seams. An over-inflated boat, especially on a hot day, risks damaging those seams over time. Getting it right is a science.

The Correct Inflation Sequence

Always inflate your boat in a specific order to ensure even pressure and correct hull shape. For an inflatable catamaran like an AeroCat or Viper:

  1. Sponsons (Main Tubes) to 50%: Partially inflate the two main outer tubes first. Don't go to full pressure. Just give them enough air to take shape. This makes it easier to install the air deck floor correctly.

  2. Install the Air Deck: With the main tubes soft, slide the high-pressure air deck into place. Ensure it's sitting flat and centred between the tubes. The edges of the deck should be tucked neatly under the retaining strips or lips on the inside of the sponsons.

  3. Inflate the Bow/Keel (if applicable): Inflate any smaller chambers at the bow or a V-keel tube next. Again, just give them shape for now.

  4. Sponsons to 100%: Now, go back to the main tubes and inflate them to their recommended working pressure. This is typically around 3.5 PSI (or 24 kPa). Your pump should have a gauge to monitor this. Inflating the main tubes now will lock the air deck firmly in place.

  5. Air Deck to 100%: Finally, inflate the high-pressure air deck. This is critical. The deck needs to be rock-hard to provide rigidity. For our boats, the target pressure is 8–10 PSI (55–69 kPa). It will feel completely solid, like a conventional fibreglass floor. You will not achieve this with lung power or a cheap lilo pump; you must use the supplied high-pressure pump.

Pressure, Temperature, and Your Pump

Air expands when it heats up. If you inflate your boat to a perfect 10 PSI on a cool morning and then leave it on a boat ramp in the hot Aussie sun, the internal pressure can rise significantly, potentially exceeding 12-13 PSI. This is why premium boats have pressure relief valves (PRVs). They automatically vent excess pressure to protect your investment.

Even with PRVs, a good habit is to inflate to the lower end of the recommended range (e.g., 8 PSI for the deck) if you're setting up in the cool morning air for a long day in the sun. The pressure will naturally increase as the day warms up. Conversely, if you launch into cold water, the air inside will cool and contract, and you may need to top it up slightly after 10-15 minutes.




Assembling the Deck, Seats, and Transom

With the boat fully inflated, it's time for the final assembly. This is where your vessel transforms from a balloon into a functional craft.

Installing Seats and Accessories

Most modern inflatables use an adjustable track system for the seats. Slide the seat bases into the fabric tracks on top of the tubes before you fully tension them. This allows you to position them perfectly for your height and for balancing the boat's load. Attach the oars. Check that they can be secured properly in their clips and that you have full range of motion. Even with an outboard, you must always have a secondary means of propulsion.

The Transom: The Heart of Your Boat

The transom is the flat, solid section at the back of the boat where the outboard motor mounts. It's arguably the most critical structural component. On a quality inflatable, it will be made of thick, marine-grade plywood or a composite material, fully sealed and bonded to the inflatable tubes.

Check that the transom is perfectly rigid and the bond to the tubes is secure. Ensure the motor mounting plates (both inside and out) are fixed securely to the transom wood.

How to Commission a New Inflatable Boat: Mounting the Outboard

Mounting the outboard correctly is crucial for performance, safety, and preventing the loss of your expensive motor. This is a two-person job, especially with heavier 4-stroke engines like the Hidea 9.9hp.

Lifting and Centring

  1. Position the Boat: Have the boat on a stand or trailer, or with the transom overhanging a step or gutter so the outboard leg can hang freely.
  2. Lift Correctly: Lift the motor using its designated carry handle. Use your legs, not your back. A 9.9hp 4-stroke weighs around 40kg. Have one person guide the motor onto the transom while the other lifts.
  3. Centre the Motor: This is non-negotiable. The motor's anti-cavitation plate must be perfectly aligned with the centreline of the boat's transom. Use a tape measure. Being even a few centimetres off-centre will cause the boat to pull to one side and handle poorly.

Setting the Height and Clamping

The height of the motor is just as important as its centering. The goal is to have the anti-cavitation plate (the flat plate just above the propeller) level with, or very slightly below (within 25mm), the bottom of the boat's hull. On an inflatable catamaran, this means level with the bottom of the sponsons.

  • If the motor is too high, the propeller will suck in air from the surface (ventilate), causing a loss of thrust and a terrible noise.
  • If the motor is too low, it creates excessive drag, reduces speed and fuel efficiency, and increases spray.

Once the motor is centred and at the correct height, tighten the two screw clamps onto the transom by hand. Get them as tight as you can with your hands only. Then, lock them in place with the small locking handles. For added security and insurance purposes, many owners drill a hole through the transom and bolt the motor on, or use a separate padlock and cable.




The Engine's First Start: The Break-In Period

A brand new 4-stroke outboard, like the Hidea motors we pair with our boats, is a beautiful piece of engineering. But it's not ready for full-throttle action straight out of the box. You must follow the break-in procedure meticulously.

The Most Important Oil Fill of Its Life

Your new 4-stroke outboard is shipped without oil in the engine sump. We cannot stress this enough. You must add the correct amount of 10W-30 four-stroke marine engine oil before you attempt to start it.

  1. Place the engine on a stand or securely on the boat in a vertical position.
  2. Locate the oil filler cap (yellow) and the dipstick.
  3. Unscrew the cap and, using a funnel, slowly add the specified amount of oil (check your Hidea manual—it's usually around 800ml for a 9.9hp).
  4. Add a small amount at a time, waiting for it to drain into the sump. Check the dipstick repeatedly. Fill until the oil level is between the 'min' and 'max' marks on the stick. Do not overfill.
  5. Attach the fuel line from your tank to the engine. Pump the primer bulb on the fuel line until it becomes firm. This means the carburettor is full of fuel.

The Break-In Procedure

The break-in period is designed to let the engine's internal components, like piston rings and bearings, seat correctly against each other. Your Hidea manual will have the precise schedule, but it generally looks like this:

  • First 15 minutes: Idle speed only.
  • Next 45 minutes: Varying speeds up to half throttle (approx 2,500-3,000 RPM).
  • Second hour: Cruising at three-quarters throttle (approx 4,000 RPM), with short bursts of full throttle for no more than one minute at a time.

It is vital that you vary the engine speed during this period. Do not hold it at a constant RPM for a long time. It's best to perform this process on the water, with the engine under load.




The Sea Trial: Your First Official Voyage

Everything is assembled, the engine is ready—it's time to get on the water. A sea trial is not a race; it's a calm and methodical test of all systems.

Choose a calm day and a protected body of water like a harbour, estuary, or quiet lake. Avoid open ocean conditions for your first launch. Before you leave the boat ramp, run through a final checklist.

Pre-Launch Checklist

  • Safety gear onboard (life jackets for all, anchor, bailer, whistle/air horn).
  • Boat registration stickers displayed correctly.
  • Hull and floor inflated to correct pressure.
  • Drain plug (bung) is in and secure.
  • Outboard is securely clamped and/or bolted.
  • Fuel tank is full and fuel line is connected properly.
  • Kill switch lanyard is attached to the driver.
  • Oars are secured but accessible.
  • Phone is fully charged and in a waterproof bag.

Start the engine while still tied to the jetty or in the shallows. Let it warm up for a minute. Check that there is a 'telltale' stream of water coming from the engine's cooling system. This is your proof that the water pump is working. If you see no water, shut the engine off immediately.

Once underway, take it easy. Listen for any unusual noises. Look at how the boat sits in the water. Perform some gentle turns. How does it handle? Is the steering responsive? Gradually increase speed according to your engine's break-in schedule. Look back at the motor. Is there excessive spray coming from the transom? If so, your motor might be too low. Is the propeller breaking the surface in turns? It might be too high.

This first hour on the water is your best opportunity to fine-tune the setup. You might need to adjust the motor's trim angle (the pin setting that controls the vertical angle of the leg) to get the bow sitting perfectly.
