Two heavy-duty boat bags containing a packed inflatable catamaran in the open boot of an SUV at a boat ramp.

The promise of a 'boat in a bag' is alluring, but the reality hinges on one question: will it actually fit in your car?

One of the most powerful advantages of a premium inflatable boat over a rigid-hull alternative is the freedom from a trailer. No registration fees, no storage hassles, no trying to reverse a clunky trailer down a tight boat ramp. The dream is to toss the boat in the back of the car and head for the water whenever the mood strikes. But how practical is this, really? Can a serious, capable vessel truly be transported inside a standard family vehicle?

For a growing number of Australian boaters, the answer is a resounding yes. The key is understanding the specifics: the packed dimensions of your boat, the capacity of your vehicle, and the right techniques for packing and handling. This isn't about stuffing a pool toy into a hatchback; it's about a systematic approach to transporting a high-performance craft like an Aerowave catamaran. Forget the vague promises from online sellersโ€”this is the definitive guide to inflatable boat car transport, based on real-world experience with our premium VALMEX fabric boats.

What Exactly Comes in the Boat Bag?

When you invest in a quality inflatable boat, you're not just getting a hull. A complete package arrives in one or more durable carry bags. Understanding what's inside is the first step to figuring out how you'll transport it. While budget PVC imports often come in a single, flimsy bag that tears after a few uses, a premium setup is designed for years of packing and unpacking.

Typically, your main boat bag will contain:

  • The Deflated Hull: This is the bulk of the weight and volume. The hull is made of heavy-duty fabric (like the German-made 1100 GSM VALMEX on our AeroCat series, or the formidable 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus on our Viper range) and includes the integrated transom for mounting your outboard.
  • The High-Pressure Air Deck Floor: This is a rigid, drop-stitch floor that inflates to a rock-solid 8-10 PSI. It often packs down flat and may slide into a separate sleeve within the main bag or be packed alongside the hull.
  • Aluminium Seats: Most boats come with one or two lightweight aluminium bench seats.
  • Oars: A pair of collapsible, two-piece aluminium oars.
  • High-Volume Hand Pump: A dual-action pump for inflation.
  • Repair Kit: This includes patches, glue, and a valve tool.

At Easy Inflatables, our boats are packed with logistics in mind. The hull, floor, and accessories fit into a robust boat bag. We also offer our Australian-made Aerowave Heavy-Duty Boat Bag for A$299, or the Boat Bag & Wheel Bag Set for A$389, designed to withstand the rigours of Aussie adventures for the life of your boat, which for our VALMEX models is typically 10-12 years.

How Heavy is a Packed Inflatable Boat?

This is the critical question for OH&S and solo handling. The weight dictates whether you can lift the bag into your car alone or if you'll need a second person. It's essential to distinguish between the 'hull weight' and the 'total package weight'. Many suppliers only quote the hull weight, which is misleading.

Hereโ€™s a realistic breakdown of some of our popular models to give you a clear idea of the weights and dimensions you're working with. These are real numbers for a complete package, ready for transport.

ModelTypePacked Dimensions (Main Bag)Total Package WeightNotes on Inflatable Boat Car Transport
AeroWave AeroCat 380Inflatable CatamaranApprox. 135cm x 75cm x 45cm~65 kgA versatile size. The main bag is a two-person lift but fits comfortably in most mid-size SUVs and all utes.
Aerowave WaveRunner 380Inflatable CatamaranApprox. 125cm x 65cm x 55cm~72 kgSlightly heavier due to its unique design, but the packed shape is manageable. Ideal for ute trays and large SUVs.
Aerowave Viper 400Inflatable CatamaranApprox. 140cm x 80cm x 50cm~78 kgA substantial boat. Definitely a two-person lift. Requires a large SUV with seats down or a ute.
Aerowave Swift Tender 290Inflatable MonohullApprox. 110cm x 60cm x 35cm~42 kgAn easy one-person lift. Will fit in the boot of many large sedans and hatchbacks with the seats folded down.

As you can see, a serious 3.8-metre to 4-metre boat package weighs between 65 kg and 80 kg. While a strong individual might be able to deadlift it, it's always safer and easier with two people or a simple loading aid like a small ramp or trolley.

Can You Fit an Inflatable Boat in a Car Boot?

Yes, absolutelyโ€”provided you have the right car and the right boat. The term 'boot' can mean anything from a tiny space in a city hatchback to the cavernous rear of a LandCruiser. Let's break it down by vehicle type.

Small Hatchbacks & Sedans (e.g., Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla)

For most family-sized inflatable catamarans (3.5m+), the boot of a small car is not a realistic option for the main boat bag. You simply won't have the width or depth. However, you can often transport the boat by folding down the rear seats and sliding the bag in longways. A smaller tender, like our Aerowave Swift Tender 290 SI (A$3,749), with a packed length of 110cm and weight of 42kg, is a perfect match for this kind of vehicle. The outboard (a 5-9.9hp) and fuel tank can then sit in the remaining boot space or a footwell.

Mid-to-Large SUVs & Wagons (e.g., RAV4, Forester, CX-5, Outback)

This is the sweet spot for no-trailer boating. The large, square opening and deep boot of a modern SUV are practically designed for the 'boat in a bag' lifestyle. An AeroWave AeroCat 380 or even a Viper 400 will fit comfortably in the back of most mid-size and large SUVs, provided you fold down the rear seats. The key is the uninterrupted flat floor.

In our experience, a vehicle like a Subaru Forester can swallow an AeroCat 380 bag, a 15hp Hidea 4-stroke outboard, a 24L fuel tank, a life jacket bag, and a fishing gear crate with ease. You simply slide the heaviest itemโ€”the boat bagโ€”in first, then pack the other items around it. This setup allows two people to travel with all their boating gear securely stored inside the vehicle, protected from weather and theft.

The Ute Tray Advantage (e.g., HiLux, Ranger, D-MAX)

For ultimate convenience, nothing beats a dual-cab ute. A standard ute tray can hold a packed 4.5-metre inflatable catamaran, a 20hp outboard, a large esky, all your camping gear, and still have room to spare. There's no lifting into a confined space; you can slide the bag straight on at waist height. The ability to simply hose out the tray at the end of a trip is another huge bonus.

For ute owners, the considerations are less about if it will fit and more about how to secure it. A good quality tonneau cover or canopy is essential to protect your investment from the elements and opportunistic thieves. Strapping the bag down firmly is also crucial to prevent it from sliding and becoming damaged.

The Art of Packing: A Guide for Car Transport

Properly folding and packing your boat is not just about making it fit; it's about protecting your investment. A boat made from premium German VALMEX fabric has a lifespan of 10-12 years, but that relies on proper care. Rushing the pack-down process is a false economy.

Here is a simple checklist for a perfect pack every time:

  • Clean and Dry Thoroughly: This is the most important step. Before you even start deflating, give the boat a good rinse with fresh water, especially if you've been in saltwater. Use a towel or chamois to dry it completely. Packing a boat wet or damp encourages mould and mildew, which can degrade the fabric and seams over time. Let it air out for 30 minutes in the sun if possible.
  • Deflate All Air Chambers: Open all the valves, including the floor and keel. Using the deflation function on your pump will suck the last bits of air out, making the hull much more pliable and easier to fold.
  • Fold the Tubes Inward: With the boat laid out flat, fold the two outer tubes inward over the air deck floor. The goal is to create a long, rectangular shape that is roughly the width of your boat bag.
  • Roll From the Transom: Start at the transom (the solid rear section where the motor mounts) and begin rolling the boat up towards the bow. Keep the roll tight and compact. This method protects the transom and ensures the bulkiest part is at the core of the roll.
  • Use the Bag Correctly: Don't just stuff the rolled hull into the bag. Open the bag fully and place the rolled boat inside, then cinch it up. Our heavy-duty bags are designed with enough room to make this process frustration-free. Forcing a boat into a bag that's too small is a primary cause of damage to both the boat and the bag with budget imports.

Inflatable Boat Car Transport: Roof Rack Options

What if your boot is full of camping gear or you have a smaller car? A roof rack can be a viable alternative for inflatable boat car transport, but it requires care.

Transporting Deflated & Bagged on the Roof

This is the safest and most recommended method for roof transport. A flat platform-style roof rack or a large roof basket is ideal. You will need at least two people to lift the bag (which can be 65kg+) onto the roof of the vehicle.

  1. Check Your Roof Load Limit: Every vehicle has a specified roof load limit (dynamic, i.e., while driving), typically between 75kg and 100kg. A packed boat can easily use up this entire allowance, so you may not be able to carry much else up there.
  2. Position for Balance: Place the bag in the centre of the roof rack, ensuring the weight is distributed evenly between the crossbars.
  3. Use Quality Straps: Secure the bag with at least two, preferably three, heavy-duty cam-buckle or ratchet straps. Run them over the bag and through the rack, ensuring they are tight. Twist the straps to prevent wind vibration and noise.
  4. Cover It: Even a durable bag can suffer from wind buffeting and abrasion at 100 km/h. Using a cargo net or a simple tarp over the top adds another layer of security and protection.

Transporting Fully Inflated on the Roof

We strongly advise against this for anything other than a very short, low-speed trip (e.g., from a holiday rental to the local boat ramp a few hundred metres away). Transporting an inflated SIB at speed on a highway is risky. The large, flat underside can act like a wing, creating immense aerodynamic lift that puts enormous strain on your roof racks and the boat's D-rings. It can also cause abrasion damage to the tubes. If you must do it for a short distance, transport it upside down to minimise lift and secure it with multiple straps.

Don't Forget the Outboard Motor!

An inflatable boat is only half of the equation; you also need to transport its engine. Modern 4-stroke outboards, like the reliable Hidea motors we package with our boats, are fantastic but require specific handling during transport to prevent engine oil from seeping into the cylinder.

Every 4-stroke outboard has a designated side to lie on, usually indicated by a sticker or integrated resting pads. Typically, you lay the engine down with the tiller arm facing down. This keeps the crankcase oil where it should be. Laying it on the wrong side can cause oil to flood the cylinder, resulting in a motor that's difficult to start and blows a lot of smoke.

Outboard weights are significant. A Hidea 9.9hp is around 40kg, a 15hp is close to 50kg, and a 20hp is over 50kg. This is a heavy, awkward object. An outboard trolley can be a great investment, making it easy to wheel the motor from your garage to the car and from the car to the boat's transom. For transport, place the motor on an old blanket or heavy-duty rubber mat in your boot or ute tray to prevent scratches and contain any potential fuel or oil drips.

The Final Piece: Launching Wheels

So you've successfully transported your boat and motor to the water's edge. Now what? This is where a set of quality launching wheels transforms the experience. These wheels attach to the boat's transom and allow a single person to roll the fully assembled boatโ€”with the outboard attachedโ€”from the car park to the water like a wheelbarrow.

Without launching wheels, you'd need to carry the hull to the water, inflate it, then make a separate trip back to the car for the heavy outboard. This is exhausting and often requires two people. With wheels, the process is streamlined: assemble the boat near your car, attach the motor, and simply roll it down the ramp. Once in the water, the wheels flip up and out of the way. They are arguably the single most important accessory for unlocking the true convenience of a portable inflatable boat.

The Bottom Line

The 'boat in a bag' is not a myth. With a quality inflatable catamaran and the right vehicleโ€”most commonly a mid-size SUV or a uteโ€”you can enjoy incredible boating freedom without the burden of a trailer. It requires a methodical approach to packing, an understanding of the weights involved, and a few key accessories like launching wheels. The initial effort of learning to pack and load your boat is repaid a hundredfold with access to remote waterways, spontaneous fishing trips, and hassle-free adventures all over Australia.

Who am I actually buying from?
Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent โ€” a real person answers.
Is this really an Australian product?
Yes โ€” Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
What do I pay, and what is not included?
The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
How do I pay safely?
Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ€” transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
Is the warranty real outside Australia?
Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
Is the boat actually certified?
All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ€” ask and we will send it before you order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the packed size of a 3.8m inflatable boat?
A typical 3.8m inflatable catamaran like our AeroWave AeroCat 380 packs down into a bag approximately 135cm long, 75cm wide, and 45cm deep. The total package weight is around 65 kg, which is manageable for two adults to lift.
Can a single person handle a boat in a bag?
Smaller tenders under 3 metres (around 40-45kg) can often be handled by one person. For larger boats (3.5m+ and 60kg+), lifting the main boat bag is a two-person job for safety. However, once assembled, a single person can easily manage the boat with a good set of launching wheels.
Is it better to transport an inflatable boat on the roof or in the boot?
Transporting the boat deflated and bagged inside your vehicle (boot, or with seats down) is always the safest and most secure method. It protects the boat from weather, road grime, and theft. Roof transport is a good option if you lack internal space, but requires a suitable roof rack and secure strapping.
Do I need a special bag for inflatable boat car transport?
While our boats come with a quality bag, we highly recommend an Australian-made heavy-duty bag for long-term, frequent use. Our Aerowave Heavy-Duty Boat Bag (A$299) is made from ripstop canvas with reinforced handles, designed to outlast the flimsy bags common with budget imports.
How do you transport a 4-stroke outboard in a car?
You must lay a 4-stroke outboard on its designated side to prevent oil from leaking into the cylinder. This is usually indicated by a decal on the engine cowl, and is typically tiller-side down. Place it on a protective mat in your boot or ute tray to catch any drips.
Can I leave my inflatable boat partially inflated for transport?
We don't recommend it for car transport. A partially inflated boat is bulky, awkward, and susceptible to abrasion damage. It's always best to fully deflate and pack it correctly into its bag for maximum protection and easier handling.
Will an inflatable boat fit in my dual-cab ute with a tonneau cover?
Yes, in most cases. A packed inflatable up to about 4.5m will easily fit under a standard soft or hard tonneau cover on a dual-cab ute like a HiLux or Ranger. The boat bag's height (typically 45-55cm) is usually well below the clearance of the cover.
