Read owner storiesA drain is not a safety promise. It is a piece of hardware you should inspect before the first wet launch.
A boat listing may say โself-drainingโ without showing the stern. For anglers landing fish, families launching off sand and anyone who has shipped water over a low transom, the useful question is simpler: where can that water actually go?
Compare the outlet, the floor height and the outboard together. One glossy stern photo is not enough.
What is the difference between a grille and a drain bung?
A bung is a removable plug in an outlet. You must know when it should be fitted or opened under the maker's instructions. A grilled transom has an open, protected drainage path. The shape and location matter more than the label: sand, weed, tackle or a badly placed wheel bracket can obstruct either arrangement.
Neither makes an overloaded boat automatically safe or guarantees a dry deck. Where water travels depends on load, trim, floor geometry and whether the outlet is above or below the waterline in use.

What should you inspect at the stern before buying?
1. Trace the water path
Ask for a clear photo from deck level toward the outlet. Look for a path that does not terminate behind loose floor fittings or gear. Check how you will inspect and clean the outlet after a sandy launch.
2. Check the outboard and wheels together
A motor takes the centre of the transom. Launching wheels take the sides. Confirm their installed positions and swing paths leave the drain accessible, without blocking steering or the propeller. Compare your chosen motor's shaft specification with the individual boat's transom height; do not match on horsepower alone.
3. Ask about water at rest and under load
With crew, fuel and fishing gear aboard, a stern sits differently than it does empty on a showroom floor. Ask what happens to water on deck at rest, when accelerating and when reversing. Do not translate โopen grilleโ into โnever needs bailing.โ
Why does this matter on a fishing catamaran?
Fishing brings hooks, bait scraps, loose weed and occasionally a wave over the stern. An outlet you can see and clean is easier to assess than a claim you cannot inspect. But a grille still needs checking after a trip: rinse salt and sand, remove debris and inspect the surrounding fittings.
The AeroCat 380 is listed with a grilled drain system and a 3.80 m twin-hull layout. The Viper 330 Sports package lists a grilled transom and a 380 mm transom height for a compatible short-shaft outboard. These are different boats: compare their exact layouts and inclusions rather than treating every grille as identical.
The short inspection checklist
- See the stern from both sides and from inside the deck.
- Confirm the outlet is accessible with the outboard and launching wheels fitted.
- Ask what to do if the outlet is blocked or water remains aboard.
- Check the boat's load and motor limits before calculating your gear list.
- Follow the maker's operating instructions and carry appropriate safety gear.
A well-explained drain beats a vague โself-bailingโ badge. If the seller cannot show the stern and tell you how it works under load, keep asking.

- Who am I actually buying from?
- Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent โ a real person answers.
- Is this really an Australian product?
- Yes โ Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
- What do I pay, and what is not included?
- The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
- How do I pay safely?
- Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
- What if it arrives damaged?
- Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
- Is the warranty real outside Australia?
- Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
- Is the boat actually certified?
- All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ ask and we will send it before you order.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a grilled transom?
- It is a transom arrangement with an open grille or slots for water to leave the deck, rather than relying solely on a removable plastic drain bung. Exact placement and behaviour vary by boat.
- Is a grilled transom the same as self-bailing?
- No. Never assume a boat will empty itself in every load, trim or sea state. Inspect where the deck and outlet sit relative to the waterline and follow the boat makerโs operating guidance.
- Do I still need a bailer or bilge pump?
- Carry suitable means to remove water for your boat and operating area. An outlet is not a substitute for keeping an eye on the deck, weather, loading and required safety equipment.
- Will weeds or sand block a grille?
- They can collect at any outlet. Inspect and rinse the opening after use, especially following a sandy beach launch or fishing trip. Do not assume a grille can never clog.
- Does the drain affect launching wheels?
- It can. A central outlet and wheel mounts need adequate clearance and structural mounting points. Check the fitted wheel swing in both raised and lowered positions.
- Can I use a short-shaft outboard?
- Only if the individual boat transom height and motor specification match. For example, the listed 380 mm transom on applicable Aerowave models is intended for a compatible short-shaft setup; confirm your exact motor before ordering.
- Does a grille stop water coming in from behind?
- No drainage arrangement is a one-way guarantee in all conditions. Backflow depends on the design, load, trim and water state. Ask for a demonstration or specific operating guidance for the boat you are buying.
