If you're shopping for an inflatable catamaran in Australia in 2026, most of what you'll read online is marketing fog: vague claims about "military-grade" fabric, "commercial" builds, and "rated for" horsepower — with no paperwork behind any of it. This guide cuts through that. It's written for the buyer who wants to know exactly what they're paying for before the boat lands on their trailer.

1. Certification: the piece of paper most sellers skip
An inflatable catamaran sold in Australia should be built and certified to ISO 6185-3 — the international standard for inflatable boats over 8hp — under EU Directive 2013/53/EU (the CE marking framework for recreational craft). This isn't a nice-to-have. It's the standard that governs buoyancy, chamber design, load capacity, and construction quality.
What to look for:
- A CE plate fixed to the transom or inside the hull naming the model, category, max load, max engine power, and the notified body number.
- A Declaration of Conformity the seller can email you on request, referencing ISO 6185-3 and 2013/53/EU.
- A HIN (Hull Identification Number) unique to your boat.

2. Hull fabric: GSM and millimetres, together — not one or the other
The single biggest durability difference between catamarans on the Australian market is hull fabric. The industry benchmark is VALMEX®, a German-made PVC-coated polyester used by most reputable inflatable brands. But "VALMEX" alone isn't a spec — you need two numbers to compare boats honestly:
- GSM (grams per square metre) — the weight of the fabric.
- Millimetres — the total coated thickness.

- Puncture margin. More material between your foot and the fish hook.
Ask any seller: "What's the GSM and coated thickness of the hull fabric, and can you name the mill?" If they can't answer both parts of that question, keep looking.
3. Seam construction: welded, not glued
Fabric is only half the durability equation. The other half is how the panels are joined. Two methods dominate:
- Glued seams — cheaper to produce, faster to build, but the adhesive is the weak point. Heat, UV, and time degrade the glue long before the fabric fails. This is why so many older inflatables leak at the seams even though the tubes look fine.
- Thermo-welded seams — panels are fused under heat and pressure into a single continuous joint. No adhesive, nothing to degrade, and typically stronger than the fabric itself.

4. Landed price: the number nobody publishes
The single most useful number in your buying decision is the landed price to your door in Australia, GST-inclusive. Not the RRP, not "from" pricing, not the ex-factory price with freight listed separately in the fine print.
Australian buyers should insist on seeing:
- Boat + inclusions price (hull, floor, seats, pump, bag, oars — whatever the package covers).
- Freight to your postcode — a real number, not "TBC on order".
- GST — included or added.
- Total landed — the single figure you'll actually pay.

5. What else to check before you buy
Beyond the four big items, a short checklist that separates a good inflatable catamaran from a bad one:
Transom height and outboard shaft length
Catamaran transoms in this size class should sit around 380 mm. A shorter transom puts less prop in the water — cavitation, ventilation, and lost thrust in chop. Pair it with a short-shaft (15") outboard for tenders under 3.3 m or a long-shaft (20") outboard from 3.6 m up.
Chambers and buoyancy redundancy
Look for at least 3 independent air chambers (typically two hull tubes and a keel/floor). More chambers = more buoyancy redundancy if one is compromised. Every Aerowave catamaran has independent sealed chambers with individual valves.
Working pressure
