Inflatable Catamaran vs Other Brands: The Honest 2026 Comparison

If you've shortlisted an inflatable catamaran for use in Australia, chances are three names keep appearing: Aerowave, Takacat, and True Kit. All three make legitimate inflatable catamarans. All three have their supporters. But they aren't the same boat — and they aren't priced or built the same way.

This is a straight comparison written for the buyer who's about to spend A$4,000–A$7,000 and wants to know exactly what they're comparing before they do. Every competitor figure below is taken from that brand's own published spec page or price list, captured 24 August 2026. Where a brand doesn't publish a number, we say so rather than guess.

The short version

All three brands build inflatable catamarans in the 3.0–4.6 m range, all use PVC-coated fabric on their standard models, and all are aimed at the same buyer: someone who wants a stable, dry, easy-to-store tender or day boat that fits in a boot, a ute tray or a garage corner.

Where they differ:

• Aerowave Viper range — German VALMEX® 7321 Heavy Plus hull at 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm, thermo-welded seams, over-pressure relief valves on every tube chamber, CE certified to ISO 6185-3, 7-year hull warranty, landed to your Australian door.
• Aerowave AeroCat range — 1100 GSM / 0.9 mm VALMEX® PVC hull, the same fabric class as most comparable boats, thermo-welded, CE certified, priced under comparable landed pricing.
• Takacat Australia — 3.0–4.6 m open-transom inflatable catamarans, sold in Australia through a distributor. Their published PVC spec is a custom 0.9 mm, 1000 denier PVC, with TPU at 1.2 mm and Hypalon offered as paid alternatives.
• True Kit New Zealand — Discovery range up to 4.0 m, Mehler VALMEX® 0.9 mm / 1100 decitex hulls, shipped direct from New Zealand.

1. Hull fabric: read GSM and millimetres, not decitex

Fabric is the most measurable part of the comparison and the most often oversimplified. "VALMEX" on its own isn't a differentiator — two of the three brands here use it.

Decitex (dtex) describes the yarn in the scrim, not how much fabric you get. A 1100 dtex cloth at 0.9 mm is still a 0.9 mm cloth. The numbers that matter for abrasion are millimetres of coated thickness and grams per square metre.

The measurable point: the Aerowave Viper range is built on 1.2 mm VALMEX® Heavy Plus — 33% thicker than the 0.9 mm fabric published on the comparable Takacat and True Kit models. That's not a claim, it's the coated-thickness spec each brand publishes itself.

Takacat do offer TPU at 1.2 mm and Hypalon as paid alternatives to their standard 0.9 mm PVC, so if 1.2 mm is what you're after, ask them what that version costs.

Why 0.3 mm matters:

• More material between the hull and abrasion — oyster leases, sand, rocky ramps, gravel driveways, trailer bunks.
• More UV mass to burn through before the surface fabric degrades.
• Expected service life of 10–12 years on the 1.2 mm Viper hull, against a typical 3–7 years on 0.9 mm PVC depending on use, UV exposure and storage.

Lighter fabric packs smaller, which is exactly how it's marketed, and for a calm-water tender that's a fair trade. Fabric is also the only part of an inflatable you cannot upgrade later.

2. Over-pressure relief valves

A boat left on a trailer on a 40-degree day keeps building pressure until something lets go. A relief valve vents it before a seam does.

• Aerowave — heat-protected over-pressure relief valves on every tube chamber, standard on every boat.
• Takacat — pressure relief valves fitted to the tube chambers as well.
• True Kit — no pressure relief valves are fitted or referenced anywhere on their published technical page.

3. Seam construction

All three brands thermo-weld the seams on their PVC and VALMEX models, so this isn't a differentiator at current-model level.

The one thing worth knowing: Hypalon cannot be thermo-welded by anyone. Our Orca Hypalon upgrade is glued, and so is Takacat's Hypalon. If a seller doesn't volunteer that, ask.

4. Certification

All Aerowave catamarans (Viper and AeroCat) are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 under EU Directive 2013/53/EU, with a CE plate and Statement of Conformity supplied with every boat.

Takacat publish CE certification to ISO 6185-3 with a factory-fitted CE plate. True Kit publish CE certification to ISO 6185-3 and the EU Recreational Craft Directive, with an engraved plate riveted to the transom and Design Category C.

There's nothing to choose between the three here — every boat in this comparison ships with a CE plate carrying its build standard, design category, maximum horsepower, payload and HIN.

What to insist on regardless of brand:

• CE plate fitted to the boat.
• Statement or Declaration of Conformity referencing ISO 6185-3 and 2013/53/EU.
• A unique HIN on your hull.

CE covers construction. Australian state-level Boat Code certification and your HIN check are a separate step the owner completes locally, whichever boat you buy.

5. Transom, horsepower and payload at 4.0 m

Transom height decides how much prop sits in the water, and it's the single most common cause of ventilation and cavitation complaints on inflatables. Almost nobody publishes it.

• Aerowave — 380 mm fully horizontal grilled transom, height published, no bung to clog.
• Takacat 3.8 m LX — removable open tube transom. No transom height published.
• True Kit Discovery 4.0 — folded marine-grade aluminium transom. No transom height published.

At 4.0 m the closest direct comparison is the Aerowave Viper 400 and the True Kit Discovery 4.0 — both 4.0 m boats, both rated 8–10 PSI. Working pressure is a tie.

6. Warranty and parts

• Aerowave — 7 years on the Viper Series: 5 years standard plus extended years 6 and 7. Valves, seats, floor panels, handles and transom hardware held in Australia and at our offshore hub, DHL Express to your door. +61 2 4335 1603.
• Takacat — 5 year warranty. Parts ordered through the Australian distributor.
• True Kit — 5 year limited warranty, as stated on truekit.net.

A warranty is the only durability claim a manufacturer has to pay for. Two extra years is two extra years of their money, not ours. And warranty length matters less than where the parts actually sit when you need them.

7. Landed price to Australia

This is where comparisons usually get fuzzy, because RRPs are published but the number that lands at an Australian door often isn't. Compare landed against landed.

Aerowave — Australian dollars, GST included, delivered.

Our full package is the boat, bimini sun top, high-pressure air deck, 22 PSI electric pump, seats, oars, carry bag and repair kit, with GST and free FedEx/DHL delivery into Australia included. An Orca Hypalon hull is available as a paid alternative to VALMEX® at +A$1,900 — glued rather than welded, because Hypalon can't be welded.

Takacat Australia — A$4,990 for the 3.8 m LX PVC boat through the Australian distributor, plus delivery. Their LX Series includes a transom board, oars, one inflatable seat, two carry bags, a repair kit and a manual pump. Biminis, dry bags, wheels, electric pumps and quick-release rod holders are listed separately. Adding their own listed large bimini at A$579 and 12 V Speedy electric pump at A$279 takes it to A$5,848 plus delivery. Their Hypalon 3.8 m lists at A$8,490 against A$4,990 for the PVC boat.

True Kit New Zealand — the 4.0 m Discovery lists at NZ$4,410 for the boat and NZ$5,200 for the Discovery Package on the maker's own site, before freight, GST and clearance into Australia. That package is the boat, removable wheels, premium seat bag, bow bridle and boat bags — no bimini and no electric pump, both sold separately.

Do the same exercise for any quote you receive: boat + the accessories you actually want + freight + GST + any duties = landed to your door. That's the only number worth comparing.

8. Custom build vs fixed SKU

One structural difference: the Aerowave configurator lets you spec hull colour, floor (high-pressure air deck standard, aluminium floor available on the Viper Sovereign), LockPro Plus wheels in grey or red, bimini, seats, pump and add-ons before your boat is built. Every Aerowave boat is built to order.

9. Which one should you buy?

Straight answer:

• You want the thickest published hull fabric in this class → Aerowave Viper range, 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm VALMEX® Heavy Plus.
• You want a well-built 0.9 mm VALMEX catamaran at the lowest landed Australian price → Aerowave AeroCat range.
• You want a specific model the local Takacat or True Kit dealer already has in stock, and the spec and price suit you → those are legitimate boats.

Where Aerowave wins is the combination: 1.2 mm VALMEX, relief valves on every chamber, a published transom height, 7 years of hull warranty, an Australian landed price with no bill at the border, custom configuration, and parts held in-country.

What to send every seller before you decide

Same six questions apply regardless of brand:

1. CE Statement or Declaration of Conformity referencing ISO 6185-3 and 2013/53/EU?
2. Hull fabric GSM and coated thickness in millimetres?
3. Welded or glued seams, and are relief valves fitted to the tubes?
4. Landed price to postcode [xxxx], GST-inclusive, delivered?
5. Warranty term and what it covers?
6. Where are spare parts held and what's the turnaround?

If Aerowave, Takacat and True Kit all answer those six clearly, compare the answers side by side. That's the honest comparison.
