Read owner storiesWhat "best inflatable boat brand" actually means
Search "best inflatable boat brands" and you get lists written by people who have never had one on a sandbar at low tide with a dead battery. So here is an honest framework instead of a popularity contest — the things that actually determine whether a boat is still good in year eight, and how we stack up against them. We sell boats, so read this with that in mind; every claim below is a specification you can verify, not an opinion.
The five things that separate good brands from marketing
1. Fabric — specified in GSM and millimetres
This is the single biggest predictor of lifespan, and it is where most brands are deliberately vague. A brand quoting only "1100 GSM" or only "0.9 mm" is giving you half the picture. You need both.
The market broadly sits in three bands:
| Tier | Typical spec | Realistic Australian service life |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Unbranded 0.7–0.9 mm PVC | 1–3 seasons |
| Mainstream | Branded 0.9 mm PVC or 1.0 mm Hypalon, typically 0.9 mm PVC | 3–7 years |
| Premium | German VALMEX® 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm Heavy Plus, or Orca Hypalon | 10–12 years |
Aerowave Viper hulls are built in the premium band — VALMEX® 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm Heavy Plus, with Orca Hypalon available as an upgrade. Our AeroCat range uses genuine VALMEX® 1100 GSM / 0.9 mm, which is the same fabric family most premium-priced competitors use as their top spec. Two tiers, both ours, both honestly labelled.
Question to ask any brand: what is the fabric brand, the GSM and the millimetre thickness? If you cannot get all three in writing, that is your answer.
2. Seam construction — welded, not glued
Glued seams fail. Not immediately, but predictably: heat cycles them, UV embrittles the adhesive, and the first sign is usually a slow leak that "only needs a bit of air each trip". Thermo-welded seams fuse the fabric itself and do not have an adhesive layer to fail.
Every Aerowave hull is welded. Ask for the same in writing from anyone else.
3. Certification
CE certification to ISO 6185-3 under EU Directive 2013/53/EU means the boat's construction, buoyancy and capacity ratings have been independently assessed. It is not the same thing as your state's boat code certification — that is a separate step you do as owner — but it tells you the hull was engineered to a published standard rather than a factory's best guess.
All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3.
4. Warranty that matches the claim
A brand's warranty is its own internal estimate of failure rate. Short warranties on premium-priced boats tell you something.
- Aerowave Viper 400 Sovereign — 7 years
- Aerowave Viper range — 5 years
- WaveRunner 380 — 5 years
- Accessories — 12 months
5. Parts and support after the sale
The most expensive boat is the one you cannot get a valve, a seat, a transom bracket or a floor panel for. We hold replacement parts in both Australia and our Hong Kong hub, shipped DHL Express to your door. Ask any brand where their spares actually sit and how long a valve takes to arrive.
Honest review: where our boats are genuinely good
Aerowave Viper 400 Sovereign (catamaran, 4.0 m). The one we would buy. Twin 1.2 mm VALMEX tubes, 380 mm transom, seven-year warranty, rated to 750 kg and six adults. Enormous stable deck, shallow draft, tracks dead straight. It is the boat that handles a family, a camping load and a rough ramp without drama.
Aerowave Viper 330 (catamaran, 3.3 m). The apartment-and-SUV boat. Packs into a boot, still carries four, still fishes properly. If space at home is the constraint, this is where to start.
Aerowave Viper 430 / 450 (catamaran). Seven adults, 40 hp, 2.0 m beam. This is the workhorse end — the boat for big loads, long days and people who want to stop thinking about capacity.
Aerowave AeroCat 330 / 360 / 380. Genuine VALMEX 0.9 mm at a sharper price. Same hull geometry philosophy, thinner fabric, honestly priced accordingly. Right choice for lighter use and tighter budgets.
Aerowave Sport Series monohulls. Deep-V hulls for people who run distance in open water and want the softest possible ride at speed. Different tool, different job.
Honest review: where we are not the answer
We would rather tell you now than after you have paid.
- You want a hard-sided runabout. An inflatable is not that. If you tow a trailer everywhere and store on a driveway, a hard boat may suit you better.
- You want the cheapest boat available. We are not it, and we would not want to be. Our entry point starts where honest fabric starts.
- You need it this week. Boats are built to order — 14 to 21 days build, then 7 to 14 days air freight. Ready-to-ship stock exists but is limited to specific models and colours.
- You want a centre console. We do not build them.
How to compare any two brands in ten minutes
Put both boats side by side and fill this in. If a brand will not answer a row, that is the finding.
- Fabric brand, GSM and mm thickness
- Seams: welded or glued
- Certification standard and number
- Transom height and maximum power
- Rated persons and maximum load in kg
- Warranty length, in writing, for the hull specifically
- Where replacement parts are held and typical delivery time
- Landed price including freight, duty and GST — not the sticker price
That eighth row catches more people than any other. A cheaper boat with $900 of freight and duty behind it is not a cheaper boat. Our Australian delivery is a flat A$600 landed and international orders quote DDP up front.
What we would tell a friend
Buy on fabric specification and seam construction first, hull geometry second, price third. Ignore anything a brand cannot put in writing. Add up your real load before you choose a length, and go one size up if you are between two models.
If that leads you to us, good. If it leads you elsewhere with a boat that lasts a decade, that is still a better outcome than a 0.9 mm hull replaced inside two years.

- Who am I actually buying from?
- Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent — a real person answers.
- Is this really an Australian product?
- Yes — Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
- What do I pay, and what is not included?
- The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
- How do I pay safely?
- Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
- What if it arrives damaged?
- Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us — transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
- Is the warranty real outside Australia?
- Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
- Is the boat actually certified?
- All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat — ask and we will send it before you order.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best inflatable boat brand in Australia?
- There is no single answer, but there is a reliable test: fabric specified in both GSM and millimetres, welded rather than glued seams, CE certification to ISO 6185-3, a hull warranty of five years or more, and parts held locally. Judge every brand on those five, including ours.
- What fabric should a good inflatable boat use?
- Premium boats use German VALMEX® 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm Heavy Plus or Orca Hypalon, which deliver 10–12 years of Australian service life. Mainstream boats use branded 0.9 mm PVC or 1.0 mm Hypalon at 3–7 years. Budget unbranded PVC is often replaced inside two seasons.
- Are welded seams better than glued seams?
- Yes. Glued seams rely on an adhesive layer that heat cycling and UV eventually break down, usually showing first as a slow leak. Thermo-welded seams fuse the fabric itself with no adhesive to fail. Every Aerowave hull is welded.
- Does CE certification matter on an inflatable boat?
- It means the hull's construction, buoyancy and capacity ratings were assessed against ISO 6185-3 under EU Directive 2013/53/EU rather than estimated by the factory. It is separate from your state's boat code certification, which remains an owner step.
- How long should an inflatable boat last?
- On premium 1.2 mm VALMEX with welded seams, 10 to 12 years in Australian conditions with basic care. On 0.9 mm branded fabric, expect 3 to 7 years. On unbranded budget PVC, one to three seasons is common.
- What warranty should I expect on an inflatable boat?
- Five years on the hull is a reasonable premium benchmark. The Aerowave Viper range carries five years, the Viper 400 Sovereign carries seven, and accessories carry twelve months.
- How do I compare inflatable boat prices fairly?
- Compare landed price, not sticker price. Add freight, duty and GST to every quote. A cheaper boat with A$900 of freight and import charges behind it is not cheaper. Australian delivery on our boats is a flat A$600 and international orders are quoted DDP.
