Boats in use โ offshore, on rivers, on rescue duty. Photos and words from the people who actually own them.
Read owner storiesThe right inflatable boat is the one you will actually use. Most people buy on price, then discover the boat is too heavy to launch alone, or the fabric is too thin for the beach they launch off.
This is the guide we wish every Australian buyer read first. It covers sizing, hull fabric, floors, motors, real prices, and the registration question โ in plain language, in Australian dollars.
1. Pick the size before anything else
Length decides weight, capacity and how far offshore you can sensibly go.
| Length | People | Best for | Typical motor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.3โ2.9 m | 2 | Yacht tender, dam, sheltered bay | 2.5โ5 hp |
| 3.0โ3.3 m | 2โ3 | Estuary fishing, one-person launch | 6โ9.9 hp |
| 3.6โ4.0 m | 3โ4 | Family day boat, serious fishing | 15โ20 hp |
| 4.3โ4.5 m | 4โ5 | Bigger water, longer runs, gear | 20โ30 hp |
The test almost nobody applies
Can you get it to the water on your own on the day you feel lazy? If the answer is no, the boat will sit in the garage. Wheels and a light hull matter more than an extra 300 mm of length.
2. Catamaran, monohull or RIB?
Inflatable catamaran
Two tubes, flat floor between them, open or partly open bow. Extremely stable, huge usable deck, drives onto sand. This is the format most Australian beach launchers end up on. See the Aerowave catamaran range.
Inflatable monohull (traditional dinghy shape)
A pointed bow and a V or air-deck floor. Cheaper, packs smaller, cuts chop reasonably. Great as a yacht tender.
RIB (rigid inflatable boat)
Fibreglass or alloy hull with tubes on top. Best ride at speed, worst storage โ it needs a trailer and a place to keep it.
3. Fabric: the spec that separates a 4-year boat from a 12-year boat
Ignore the brochure photos. Look for GSM and millimetres together.
- 1100 GSM / 0.9 mm VALMEXยฎ โ the standard in this class. Fine for careful owners and calm water. Used on our AeroCat range.
- 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus โ 33% thicker. Used on the Aerowave Viper range, with an extra protection layer bonded under the tubes and keel.
- Orca Hypalon โ available as a +A$1,900 upgrade for maximum UV and chemical resistance.
Premium VALMEX has a real-world life of 10โ12 years with basic care. If a seller quotes only "0.9 mm" with no GSM, or no fabric spec at all, ask.
Seams matter just as much: welded seams outlast glued seams in Australian heat, full stop.
4. Floors
- Air deck (drop-stitch) โ light, fast to set up, forgiving underfoot. Standard on most Aerowave boats.
- Aluminium floorboards โ stiffer for standing and fishing, heavier, slower to rig. A +A$500 upgrade on the Sovereign 400.
- Slat floor โ entry level only; fine for a tender, not for standing.
5. Motors: how much horsepower do you actually need?
- 2.5โ5 hp โ tender duty, planing one adult at best
- 9.9 hp โ will plane a 3.3 m cat with two people
- 15 hp โ the sweet spot for a 3.8 m family boat
- 20 hp โ 4.0 m and up, loaded, with a comfortable cruise
Two Australian-specific notes:
- Transom height matters more than brand. Our WaveRunner and Viper transoms are 380 mm, which keeps the prop properly submerged and stops the ventilation and cavitation that plague taller transoms.
- Outboards and electric motors are sold to the Australian market only. Boats ship worldwide; motors do not.
Browse Hidea outboards or read the boat with motor buyer's guide.
6. What inflatable boats actually cost in Australia
Rough 2026 bands for a complete, usable boat:
| Tier | Price band | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Budget import | Under A$2,000 | Thin unbranded PVC, glued seams, no support |
| Mid | A$3,000โ5,000 | 0.9 mm branded fabric, decent floor, some gear extra |
| Premium | A$5,000โ7,500 | 1.2 mm VALMEX, welded seams, wheels/seats/pump/bimini included |
| Package with motor | A$7,500โ12,000 | The above plus a new four-stroke outboard |
Watch for the extras that turn a "cheap" boat expensive: wheel kit, seats, a pump that reaches 10 PSI, a bimini, a carry bag, freight. Our full packages fold those in.
Finance is available through AMMF, and there is a calculator on every product page.
7. Registration and licensing
Rules are set by each state and generally turn on the motor fitted, not the hull material. Aerowave boats are fully registerable in Australia via a Boat Code operator certificate, followed by state registration.
Start here: Safety, Registration & Compliance, and the deeper dive in Do you need to register an inflatable boat in Australia?
8. Are inflatable boats safe?
Yes โ a multi-chamber inflatable is arguably the most forgiving small boat afloat. Each tube is divided into sealed chambers, so a puncture in one does not sink the boat. Add the usual discipline:
- Carry the state-required safety gear
- Check the forecast, especially afternoon sea breeze
- Keep pressure at 8โ10 PSI; a soft boat handles badly
- Wear the kill cord
9. Care that gets you to year twelve
- Rinse with fresh water after every salt trip, including under the floor
- Dry before folding โ mould eats fabric coatings
- Store out of direct sun; tube chaps help if the boat lives outside
- Drop pressure a little in extreme heat if the boat is left inflated
- Check valve cores twice a season

- Who am I actually buying from?
- Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent โ a real person answers.
- Is this really an Australian product?
- Yes โ Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
- What do I pay, and what is not included?
- The price you see is the boat with freight already included on our supported lanes. Import duty and local taxes are payable by you on arrival โ we do not hide them inside the price, and we do not pretend they do not exist.
- How do I pay safely?
- Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
- What if it arrives damaged?
- Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
- Is the warranty real outside Australia?
- Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
- Is the boat actually certified?
- All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ ask and we will send it before you order.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does an inflatable boat cost in Australia?
- A complete, usable inflatable boat runs about A$3,000 to A$5,000 in the mid tier and A$5,000 to A$7,500 for a premium 1.2 mm VALMEX package with wheels, seats, pump and bimini included. Add roughly A$2,500 to A$4,500 for a new four-stroke outboard.
- What size inflatable boat do I need for four people?
- Look at 3.6 m to 4.0 m. That gives four adults room to sit and move, and carries a 15 to 20 hp outboard comfortably.
- Are inflatable boats safe on the ocean?
- Multi-chamber inflatables are very safe in sheltered coastal water when used within their rating. Each tube has sealed chambers, so one puncture will not sink the boat. Check the forecast and carry the safety gear your state requires.
- Do you need a licence for an inflatable boat in Australia?
- Licensing is set by each state and usually depends on the motor fitted rather than the hull type. Check your state authority, and see our safety, registration and compliance page for a summary.
- How long do inflatable boats last?
- A premium VALMEX hull with welded seams lasts 10 to 12 years with basic care. Cheap unbranded PVC with glued seams often starts failing within three to five Australian summers.
- What is the difference between 0.9 mm and 1.2 mm hull fabric?
- 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus is 33% thicker than the 0.9 mm VALMEX common in this class, which means more abrasion resistance for beach and rock launching and a longer service life.
- Can I put a motor on any inflatable boat?
- Only up to the transom rating on the plate. Overpowering an inflatable is unsafe. Also note outboards and electric motors are sold to the Australian market only, while boats ship worldwide.
