Length is the decision people get wrong most often with inflatable boats โ and it's the one you can't fix later with an accessory. Half a metre changes how many people fit, what motor you can hang, whether you can lift it, and whether the boat still gets used in year three.
Here is how to size it properly for Australian water.
Quick answer by use case
| You mostly do this | Size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Yacht tender, mooring runs | 2.3โ2.9 m | Light, packs small, easy to stow on deck |
| Two adults, estuary and river fishing | 3.3 m | Cheapest real fishing platform that still fits a small boot |
| Family of four, protected bays | 3.65โ3.8 m | Room for gear and a bimini without going heavy |
| Four adults, offshore capable, camping | 4.0 m | Load capacity and waterline length for chop |
What each extra half-metre actually buys you
3.3 m โ the honest two-person boat
A 3.3 m inflatable is the smallest length that works as a genuine fishing platform. Two adults can both fish without standing on each other. It's light enough for one person to move on launching wheels, and it packs into most hatchbacks.
Where it falls down: add a third adult, an esky and a battery and freeboard drops noticeably.
See the Viper 330 at A$5,195 or the AeroCat 330 at A$3,995.
3.65โ3.8 m โ the family sweet spot
This is where most Australian buyers land. You gain roughly a person's worth of usable deck, enough beam for a bimini to be worth fitting, and a hull long enough that a 15 hp planes properly with three aboard.
See the WaveRunner 380 Series 3 at A$4,680 or the Viper 365 Open Bow at A$5,595.
4.0 m โ load, range and rougher water
At 4.0 m the waterline is long enough to carry through chop rather than slap over it. This is the size for four adults, overnight camping loads, or anyone running further than a protected bay.
See the Viper 400 Sovereign at A$6,970.
Match the motor to the length
Under-powering is as expensive a mistake as buying short.
| Length | Sensible motor | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7 m tender | 2.5โ5 hp | Displacement speed, mooring runs |
| 3.3 m | 9.9โ15 hp | Planes with two aboard |
| 3.65โ3.8 m | 15 hp | Planes with three and gear |
| 4.0 m | 20 hp | Planes fully loaded, holds plane in chop |
Transom height matters as much as horsepower. Our WaveRunner series uses a 380 mm transom so more of the prop stays buried โ that's what stops the ventilation and cavitation people blame on the motor.
Four sizing checks before you buy
1. Weigh the people, not the seats
Capacity plates count bodies. Add 15 kg of gear per person and re-check. A boat rated for four adults with nothing aboard is a boat for three with fishing gear.
2. Measure the storage space first
Measure your boot, garage shelf or ute tray before you choose. A packed 3.3 m and a packed 4.0 m are meaningfully different bundles.
3. Can you launch it alone?
If you fish on your own, the honest test is whether you can wheel it down soft sand solo. Launching wheels change the answer for most people at every size.
4. Think three years ahead
Kids grow, mates come along, and the trip gets more ambitious. Of the people who regret a size choice, almost all of them went too small.
Common size mistakes
- Buying 3.3 m for a family of four to save money
- Choosing 4.0 m when the boat lives in a small apartment garage and never comes out
- Fitting a 9.9 hp to a 3.8 m boat and blaming the hull for not planing
- Ignoring beam โ two boats of the same length can differ substantially in usable deck width
For the wider decision, read inflatable boats compared and the complete buyer's guide.

- Who am I actually buying from?
- Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent โ a real person answers.
- Is this really an Australian product?
- Yes โ Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
- What do I pay, and what is not included?
- The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
- How do I pay safely?
- Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
- What if it arrives damaged?
- Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
- Is the warranty real outside Australia?
- Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
- Is the boat actually certified?
- All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ ask and we will send it before you order.
Frequently asked questions
- What size inflatable boat do I need?
- Two adults fishing an estuary are well served by 3.3 m. A family of four in protected water wants 3.65 to 3.8 m. Four adults with gear, or anyone heading offshore, should be at 4.0 m.
- Is a 3.3m inflatable boat big enough for a family?
- For two adults and two small children in flat water, yes. For four adults or a family plus fishing gear and an esky, it will feel crowded and lose freeboard. Step up to 3.65 m or larger.
- What motor size suits a 3.8m inflatable boat?
- A 15 hp is the practical match for 3.65 to 3.8 m, and it will plane with three aboard. A 20 hp suits 4.0 m boats carrying a full load.
- Does a bigger inflatable boat ride better?
- Generally yes. A longer waterline carries through chop instead of slapping over it, which is why 4.0 m boats feel far more settled in open water than 3.3 m boats.
- How much space does a packed inflatable boat need?
- Most 3.3 m boats pack into a hatchback boot. A 4.0 m packs into a wagon boot, ute tray or a garage corner. Measure your storage space before choosing the length.
- Can one person launch a 4.0m inflatable boat alone?
- Yes, with launching wheels on firm sand or a ramp. Without wheels, solo launching gets hard above about 3.3 m.
