Most people don't need "the best inflatable boat". They need the right one for the water they actually use.
Inflatable boats in Australia now cover everything from a 2.7 m yacht tender you can carry down a pontoon to a 4.0 m catamaran that will run four adults and a full day's fishing gear offshore. The problem is that every brand compares itself to a different thing, so buyers end up guessing.
This guide puts the main types side by side on the things that actually decide whether you enjoy the boat: hull format, fabric, load, launching, storage and real delivered price.
The four formats you are choosing between
1. Inflatable catamaran (twin hull, open transom)
Two long tubes, an open stern, a drop-stitch or aluminium floor between them. Shallow draft, very dry ride at low speed, exceptional stability at rest because the buoyancy sits at the outer edges. Water drains straight out the back, which is why they're popular for beach launching and fishing.
2. Monohull inflatable (SIB)
Classic tender shape with a closed transom and a V-ish air floor. Cheaper, lighter, very packable. Fine for estuaries, rivers and getting out to a mooring.
3. RIB (rigid inflatable boat)
Fibreglass or aluminium hull with inflatable collar. Best ride in a chop, worst for storage โ you can't fold the hull away. It's a boat that lives on a trailer.
4. Inflatable tender
Small, light, purpose-built to hang off a yacht or sit in a boot. Not a fishing platform, and not pretending to be.

Fabric is the single biggest spec difference
Two boats can look identical and be a decade apart in service life.
- 1100 decitex 0.7 / 0.9 mm PVC โ the common import spec. Fine in fresh water and light use.
- 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus โ a third more material through the tube wall. This is what the Aerowave Viper range is built on, and what survives oyster racks, sand, ramps and UV year after year.
- Orca Hypalon โ available as an upgrade on selected models where a boat lives permanently on davits in full sun.
Premium VALMEX fabric lifespan in Australian conditions is 10โ12 years. Ask any seller for GSM and millimetres together โ a millimetre figure on its own tells you nothing about weave density.
Seams matter just as much: hot-air welded seams don't creep in heat the way glued seams do. We break that down in welded vs glued seams.

How to choose in five minutes
- Where do you launch? Beach or bank with no ramp โ catamaran with launching wheels. Marina berth or trailer only โ RIB is viable.
- How do you store it? Garage, boot or ute tray โ it must deflate. That rules the RIB out.
- How many aboard? Two adults โ 3.3 m. Three to four adults or a family with gear โ 3.8โ4.0 m.
- What do you do on the water? Standing and casting rewards a catamaran's flat, stable platform. Long open-water runs reward a RIB.
- How long do you want it to last? If the answer is "a decade", buy on fabric spec, not on sticker price.
Where buyers get it wrong
- Buying too small to save $700. The most common regret. A 3.3 m fits two comfortably, not four.
- Ignoring transom height. A short transom lets the prop ventilate in chop. Our WaveRunner series runs a 380 mm transom to keep more prop in the water.
- Under-powering. A 3.8โ4.0 m boat with a 9.9 hp will plane with one person and plough with three.
- Forgetting the launch. A boat you can't get down the sand on your own is a boat you stop using.

The short answer
For most Australian buyers launching off a beach, ramp or riverbank and storing the boat at home, an inflatable catamaran in 3.3โ4.0 m built on 1.2 mm VALMEX is the format that keeps getting used. A tender is right if you're servicing a yacht. A RIB is right if you already own a trailer and run long open water.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the best type of inflatable boat for Australian conditions?
- For beach and estuary use, an inflatable catamaran between 3.3 m and 4.0 m suits most Australian buyers: shallow draft, self-draining open transom, and stable enough to stand and cast. RIBs ride better in sustained offshore chop but cannot be deflated and stored.
- How much do inflatable boats cost in Australia?
- A quality package sits between roughly A$3,250 for a 2.7 m tender and A$6,970 for a 4.0 m catamaran. Anything under about A$1,500 is a recreational toy rather than a coastal boat.
- How long do inflatable boats last?
- It depends almost entirely on fabric. A 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus hull gives 10 to 12 years in Australian sun and salt with normal care. Thin 0.7 to 0.9 mm imports typically fade and soften much sooner.
- Are inflatable boats stable enough to stand up and fish?
- Catamaran formats are, because the buoyancy sits at the outer edges of the boat. Monohull SIBs are noticeably tippier when you move to the gunwale.
- Do inflatable boats need to be registered in Australia?
- Once fitted with a motor, registration rules follow your state and territory. We cover the process, including Boat Code operator certification, on our registration and boat coding page.
- What size inflatable boat do I need for four adults?
- Plan on 3.8 m to 4.0 m. A 3.3 m will legally carry four in many configurations but will feel crowded once you add fuel, an esky and fishing gear.
- Is an inflatable boat better than a tinny?
- An inflatable is lighter, stores at home without a trailer, and is far more forgiving alongside rocks and jetties. A tinny takes more punishment on a hard ramp. We compare true ownership cost in a dedicated article.
