Close-up of VALMEX Heavy Plus, the reinforced PVC fabric used in a premium inflatable tender

A tender is asked to do a lot quietly: wait in the Australian sun, rub against a marina berth, meet a beach or concrete ramp, then carry people and gear back to the yacht. Its fabric is not a decorative detail. It is the working surface between your boat and the world.

That is why premium tender fabric costs more than generic 0.9 mm PVC. With VALMEX Heavy Plus or an optional ORCA Hypalon build, youโ€™re paying for a stronger material specification and, just as importantly, for construction suited to that material. The best choice depends on where the tender lives and how you use it.

What makes a tender fabric premium?

Inflatable boat fabric is a composite: a woven polyester core provides strength, while coatings on the outside and inside protect it and help contain air. The fabricโ€™s weight and thickness matter, but neither tells the whole story. Scrim, coating quality, seam construction, reinforcement and finishing all contribute to how a tender performs over time.

Easy Inflatables specifies its VALMEX Heavy Plus at 1,500 GSM and 1.2 mm, with a denser 1,670 dtex polyester reinforcement. The comparison is not simply โ€œthick versus thinโ€; a buyer should ask for the brand, grade, weight, thickness and construction method in writing.

A lighter 0.9 mm fabric can make sense when low weight, compact packing and a lower initial price are priorities. It is not automatically a poor choice. But for a tender that will see frequent use, rough shore access or long periods outdoors, a heavier, better-protected specification can be a more considered long-term purchase.

VALMEX Heavy Plus: premium PVC with a practical advantage

VALMEX Heavy Plus is a high-spec marine PVC fabric, not generic PVC. Its weight, thickness and reinforced textile core are intended to provide a substantial, hard-wearing hull. For owners who launch from beaches, use marina facilities or occasionally meet rougher surfaces, that extra material can offer useful resistance to everyday scuffs and abrasion.

Its other practical advantage is that PVC can be thermo-welded. In a correctly made weld, heat fuses the compatible PVC surfaces together. There is no adhesive layer in the primary seam to age in the same way as a glued PVC joint. The result depends on the builderโ€™s process and quality checks: a well-made welded seam is not a substitute for good design, accurate assembly and pressure testing.

Welded PVC is also relatively straightforward to patch using compatible PVC repair materials. That can be convenient for owners and service technicians, provided the repair is appropriate to the damage and performed with the right preparation and materials.

For many recreational yacht owners, Heavy Plus offers a strong balance: a substantial fabric specification, welded construction and practical repair options, without moving to a more costly CSM fabric.

ORCA Hypalon: when extra environmental resistance matters

ORCA Hypalon fabric detail for a premium inflatable tender

โ€œHypalonโ€ is commonly used as a familiar name for CSM-coated inflatable fabric. ORCA is a fabric brand from Pennel & Flipo; the exact grade and construction should be specified when comparing tenders. Easy Inflatables lists ORCA 828 as an optional build-to-order fabric, with a published weight of approximately 1,330 GSM. You can read more about the material options on our fabric guide.

CSMโ€™s appeal is its resistance to weathering, UV and ozone exposure. That can make it especially attractive for a tender that stays inflated on a davit, spends extended periods in a hot climate, or works hard in a commercial setting. ORCA Hypalon is also repairable, but repairs typically use compatible two-part adhesive systems and require careful surface preparation and cure time.

There is an important construction difference: Hypalon/CSM is generally bonded, not thermo-welded. It cannot be made into a heat-welded PVC seam. The quality of a bonded seam depends on the builderโ€™s materials, technique and conditions. A properly made adhesive seam can provide durable service, but it is fair to ask how the fabric is assembled, what repair system is recommended and how the finished chambers are checked.

Neither material is universally the โ€œbest tender hull material.โ€ The right comparison is the fabric and the way the boat is built, then how those choices suit your storage and use.

A tender kept under a cover or stored indoors between trips has different demands from one that lives outside on a davit in full Australian sun. Equally, a boat used for occasional sheltered-water transfers has a different workload from one regularly hauled against a dock or landed on rough shorelines.

Seams, air retention and the details that last

A fabric label cannot guarantee a leak-free tender. Air retention depends on the complete build: seams, baffles, valves, fittings, assembly quality and maintenance. Ask how the primary seams are joined and whether the finished chambers are inspected or pressure-tested.

For PVC, thermo-welding is a meaningful advantage because it fuses compatible material rather than relying on adhesive for the main joint. For CSM, skilled bonding is the established approach. Neither method makes workmanship irrelevant. In both cases, look for clear specifications, consistent finishing and support for repairs.

Everyday care matters too. Rinse off salt and grime, avoid dragging the tubes over rough concrete, protect rubbing points and follow the makerโ€™s inflation and storage guidance. A cover can reduce direct exposure, and keeping the tender clean and correctly cared for helps preserve its appearance and condition.

Does premium fabric protect resale value?

A well-documented fabric and construction specification can help a future buyer understand what they are considering. Condition, maintenance history, repairs, age and overall boat quality will still matter. No material guarantees a particular resale price or service life.

But an owner replacing a tender every few seasons may find that a lower purchase price was not the lower ownership cost. A premium hull can be a sensible investment when its advantages match the conditions it will actually face. Think in terms of the full ownership picture, not just the number on the initial quote.

The discreet luxury of buying once, properly

For a recreational tender that is stored thoughtfully and used regularly, VALMEX Heavy Plus is a compelling premium-PVC option: robust fabric, thermo-welded seams and practical repairability. If your tender will spend long periods exposed to intense sun or work in more demanding conditions, an ORCA Hypalon build may justify its additional cost.

The right answer is specific to your yacht, berthing arrangement and routine. Easy Inflatables builds inflatable boats with premium materials and thermo-welded construction where PVC is specified. Learn more about our manufacturing approach and why Easy Inflatables.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hypalon better than VALMEX for a tender?
Neither is best for every owner. VALMEX Heavy Plus (1500 GSM / 1.2 mm) is thermo-welded and easy to patch; ORCA Hypalon (CSM) adds weathering and UV resistance for boats that live outside in full sun, at a higher price.
What fabric do Aerowave Viper boats use?
Viper boats use 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm German VALMEX Heavy Plus with fully thermo-welded seams. ORCA 828 Hypalon is available as a build-to-order upgrade.
Can Hypalon be thermo-welded?
No. Hypalon (CSM) is hand-bonded with adhesive. PVC fabrics such as VALMEX Heavy Plus can be thermo-welded, fusing the seam with heat instead of glue.
How long does VALMEX Heavy Plus last?
Our fabric guide gives an estimated 10โ€“12 years under Australian UV conditions. Storage, cleaning and how hard the boat works all affect real-world life.
Is 0.9 mm fabric a poor choice?
Not automatically. A lighter 0.9 mm fabric suits owners who prioritise low weight, compact packing and a lower price. Heavier 1.2 mm fabric suits frequent use and rough shore access.
Does premium fabric help resale value?
A documented fabric and construction specification helps a future buyer understand what they are looking at, alongside condition, maintenance history and age.
