An inflatable catamaran and an aluminium tinny side by side on an Australian beach

Choosing between an inflatable boat and an aluminium boat isn't about which one is "better". It's about how you'll use it โ€” a boat you can pack away and launch without a trailer, or a permanent fishing platform ready to go at the ramp.

Here's an honest comparison of the main trade-offs for Australian buyers: cost, storage, ride, maintenance, resale and registration.

First, what do we mean by "inflatable boat"?

This comparison is mainly between a soft-hull inflatable โ€” inflatable tubes with a flexible or removable floor โ€” and an aluminium boat, often called a tinny.

A rigid inflatable boat (RIB) is a different option again: inflatable tubes on a hard hull. It offers some of the convenience of tubes with more defined hull handling, but it's usually transported and stored like a hard boat. Not every inflatable has the same ride, set-up time or carrying requirements โ€” an inflatable catamaran, for example, rides on two spaced hulls. Our guide Tender vs RIB vs Inflatable Catamaran explains the differences.

Cost: compare the whole set-up, not just the hull

A quality inflatable can be an economical way onto the water, especially when you can carry and launch it without buying a trailer. Budget for the complete package: motor, floor, seats, pump, battery, safety gear, cover and repair kit.

An aluminium boat package usually costs more upfront once you add the boat, motor and trailer. It can also bring ongoing costs for trailer registration, servicing, tyres, storage and ramp access. A tinny can still be good value if you fish often and want a ready-to-go set-up with a hard deck and room for gear.

For a fair comparison, price complete, ready-to-launch packages. Aerowave boats are sold as complete packages with delivery included in Australia โ€” compare them on our boats page. For the long-run numbers, see Tinny vs Inflatable Boat: The True Cost of Ownership.

Weight and portability: the inflatable's biggest advantage

For many buyers, this decides the inflatable vs aluminium question.

A soft inflatable deflates, packs away and stores in a garage, shed, caravan or apartment storage cage. Depending on the boat, you can carry it to the water and launch from a beach or riverbank without towing a trailer โ€” fewer storage hassles and no queue at the ramp.

The trade-off is set-up and pack-down: inflating the boat, fitting the floor and seats, and packing everything away afterwards. Check the weight of the complete package โ€” floor, motor, fuel, battery and gear โ€” not just the advertised hull weight.

An aluminium boat is quicker once it's on its trailer: hitch up, drive to the ramp and launch. You'll need a suitable tow vehicle, somewhere to keep the boat and trailer, and time to launch and retrieve at the ramp.

Durability and repair: different kinds of wear

An aluminium hull is practical for frequent fishing, rough landings and hard surfaces. It may dent or scratch, but there are no tubes to puncture, and hard gunwales make it easy to fit accessories.

Quality inflatable tubes are tough, and the fabric makes the difference. Aerowave's Viper Series uses 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm German VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus with welded seams, rated for a 10โ€“12 year service life, while the lighter AeroCat Series uses 1100 GSM / 0.9 mm VALMEXยฎ. Sharp rocks, hooks and knives still deserve respect, so check fabric, seams, valves, transom and rubbing strips regularly and carry a repair kit. Our guide Why Inflatable Boat Seams Fail explains why construction quality matters.

Ride quality in chop: hull design matters

There's no single winner for ride comfort. An aluminium boat's ride depends on its length, hull shape, weight, load and trim โ€” a light tinny can feel lively and slap in chop, while a heavier, well-designed hull feels more settled.

A soft inflatable is buoyant and stable for its size, reassuring at rest and when people move around. An inflatable catamaran adds twin hulls that track straight and keep the boat level. Load, speed and how the boat meets waves all matter, so compare specific hull designs, capacity and engine recommendations for the water you'll use. Read more in Catamarans in Choppy Water.

Maintenance: neither option is maintenance-free

After saltwater use, rinse either boat and its gear with fresh water.

Inflatable: wash away sand and grit, dry fully before long-term storage, and check pressure, valves, seams, rubbing strips and the transom. Keep the tubes out of prolonged sun when stored.

Aluminium: check for damage and corrosion, and maintain the trailer, motor, bearings, tyres, lights and fittings. A trailer adds jobs an inflatable without one avoids, while an aluminium hull needs no inflating, drying or tube checks.

Resale: condition and demand count

A well-kept aluminium boat with a sound hull, reliable motor and cared-for trailer appeals to buyers wanting a conventional fishing set-up. A good-condition inflatable attracts buyers who value portability, compact storage or tender use.

Either way, resale depends on age, condition, brand, service history, included equipment and local demand. Keep records and look after the boat.

Australian registration and safety

Boat registration varies by state and territory, and trailer registration is separate. Being inflatable doesn't automatically exempt a boat from vessel rules, and registering a boat doesn't register its trailer.

Every Aerowave boat is fully registerable in Australia via a Boat Code certificate, then state registration โ€” see our registration and boat coding guide. Also check the boat's capacity plate, maximum engine rating and the safety equipment required where you'll use it.

Which boat suits you?

An inflatable may suit you if you have limited storage, want to avoid towing, launch from beaches or riverbanks, need a compact tender for a larger boat, or go camping and travelling.

An aluminium boat may suit you if you fish very often, want a rigid deck with easy-to-mount fittings, carry substantial gear, and launch from a ramp with somewhere to keep a boat and trailer.

The best choice fits your water, storage, transport and usual passenger load โ€” not just the lowest advertised price. If portability is high on your list, explore the Easy Inflatables range and compare the full package, including motor, floor, accessories and delivery, against the tinny you're considering. Frequently asked questions

Is an inflatable boat cheaper than an aluminium boat?
Often, once you compare complete packages. An inflatable can avoid the trailer, trailer registration and storage costs that come with a tinny. Compare ready-to-launch packages including motor and delivery for a fair comparison.
Are inflatable boats as durable as aluminium boats?
They wear differently. Aluminium dents and scratches; quality inflatables use tough fabric such as 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus, rated for a 10โ€“12 year service life with good care. Regular checks and a repair kit keep either boat in top shape.
Do I need a trailer for an inflatable boat?
Not usually. A soft inflatable or inflatable catamaran packs into bags, travels in a car and launches from a beach or riverbank.
Which rides better in chop, an inflatable or a tinny?
It depends on the specific hull, weight, load and speed. Inflatables are buoyant and stable for their size, and inflatable catamarans add twin hulls that track straight. Compare specific designs for your water.
Is an aluminium boat better for fishing?
A tinny suits anglers who fish very often from a ramp and want a hard deck for fittings. An inflatable catamaran suits anglers who want to reach beaches and spots without a ramp and store the boat at home.
Do inflatable boats need registration in Australia?
Being inflatable doesn't exempt a powered boat from state rules. Every Aerowave boat is fully registerable via a Boat Code certificate, then state registration.
