For the Australian 4WD tourer, the final frontier isn't a rough trackโ€”it's the water just beyond it.

There's a unique frustration every seasoned tourer knows. You've navigated corrugated tracks, crossed deserts, and set up the perfect remote camp on the banks of a pristine river or a secluded coastal bay. You can see the fish jumping in the mangroves, the untouched island just offshore, the deep blue channel calling your name. But your adventure stops at the water's edge. Towing a traditional tinny or fibreglass boat across the country is, for most, a logistical and financial nightmare. The extra fuel, the trailer maintenance, the bone-jarring ride for the boat, and the constant fear of a catastrophic failure on a remote trackโ€”it all adds up to a compromise too far.

This is where the game changes. A premium, modern inflatable boat isn't just a tender or a toy; it's a genuine, high-performance vessel that packs down into a bag. It's the key that unlocks that final frontier, turning your 4WD into a complete land-and-sea exploration platform. Forget the flimsy, budget imports you see at camping stores. We're talking about robust, military-grade inflatable catamarans and monohulls designed for harsh conditions, capable of carrying the family, all your fishing gear, and a proper outboard motor. A 4WD inflatable boat isn't a backup plan; for the serious adventurer, it's the only plan that makes sense.

Why is a 4WD Inflatable Boat the Ultimate Touring Accessory?

The answer is simple: capability without compromise. A rigid-hull boat, whether aluminium or fibreglass, forces you to choose between accessibility and comfort. You either tow a heavy, cumbersome trailer that limits where your 4WD can go, or you settle for a tiny, unstable car-topper that's unnerving in anything but a glass-calm pond. A premium soft-inflatable boat (SIB) shatters this compromise.

  • Weight & Packability: A 3.8-metre inflatable catamaran like the Aerowave WaveRunner 380 weighs around 57kg. A comparable aluminium boat is easily double that before you even add the trailer. The inflatable packs into a bag that can go on the roof rack or in the tub of your ute, leaving your tow hitch free for a camper trailer.
  • Fuel Economy: Not towing a 500-700kg boat and trailer combination saves a massive amount of fuel. Over a 10,000km trip around the country, the savings can be thousands of dollarsโ€”often more than the cost of the inflatable boat itself.
  • Durability: Don't mistake 'inflatable' for 'fragile'. Premium boats use advanced fabrics like German-made VALMEX, the same material trusted for industrial and military applications. The Aerowave Viper series, for example, uses an incredibly tough 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus fabric. It's designed to be dragged up beaches and bump into submerged snags. It won't dent like a tinny and is far easier to repair in the field than a cracked fibreglass hull.
  • Performance: Modern inflatable catamarans are fast, stable, and incredibly efficient. They get on the plane with less horsepower, meaning you can use a smaller, lighter outboard. Their stability at rest is phenomenal, making them a perfect platform for casting, fly fishing, or just relaxing without feeling like you're in a rocking chair.

What's the Best Inflatable Boat for 4WD Trips?

Not all inflatables are created equal. For serious 4WD touring in Australia, your choice will almost certainly come down to a premium inflatable catamaran or a high-pressure air-deck monohull. The choice depends on your primary use case, but for most, the catamaran is the superior platform.

Inflatable Catamarans vs. V-Hull Monohulls

The fundamental difference lies in the hull design. A monohull, like our Aerowave Swift Tender series, has a single V-shaped inflatable keel. A catamaran, like the Aerowave AeroCat or Viper series, has two larger outer tubes and a tunnel of air down the middle. This seemingly simple difference has profound implications for performance and usability.

FeatureInflatable Catamaran (e.g., AeroCat, Viper)Inflatable V-Hull (e.g., Swift Tender)
StabilityExceptional. The wide stance and twin hulls create a rock-solid platform at rest. Ideal for standing, casting, and moving around.Good, but noticeably less stable at rest than a catamaran. More prone to side-to-side rocking.
Shallow DraftExcellent. The hulls sit high on the water, allowing you to explore extremely shallow creeks and estuaries.Very good. Can access shallow water, but the central V-keel sits deeper than the catamaran's hulls.
EfficiencyHighly efficient. The air-cushion effect in the tunnel reduces drag, allowing the boat to plane with less power and use less fuel.Good efficiency, but generally requires more power to plane compared to a catamaran of the same size.
Deck SpaceMassive, flat, and open. The rectangular shape maximises usable internal area for gear, eskies, and people.Less usable internal space due to the V-shape encroaching on the floor area, especially at the bow.
HandlingTurns flat and is very predictable. Can feel different to a conventional boat, but is extremely safe and forgiving.Handles like a traditional V-hull boat, banking into turns. May feel more familiar to some boaters.
Best Use CaseThe ultimate 4WD inflatable boat for fishing, exploring, and family use in bays, rivers, and estuaries.A fantastic all-rounder, especially as a tender or for those who prefer the handling feel of a classic V-hull.

For the vast majority of 4WD tourers exploring places like the Kimberley, Cape York, or the sheltered bays of the Coral Coast, the inflatable catamaran is the undisputed champion. The stability and shallow draft open up a world of possibilities that V-hulls and tinnies simply can't match.

High-Pressure Air Deck vs. Aluminium Floor

For touring, a high-pressure air deck is the only sensible choice. These floors inflate to a rock-solid 8โ€“10 PSI, creating a firm and stable platform that's surprisingly rigid. The alternative, an aluminium-panel floor, is heavy, clunky to assemble, gets scorching hot in the sun, and creates a racket that scares fish and drives you mad.

An air deck packs down with the boat, weighs a fraction of an alloy floor, and is far more comfortable underfoot. It also adds a layer of safety, acting as a massive secondary buoyancy chamber. All premium Aerowave modelsโ€”Viper, AeroCat, and WaveRunnerโ€”feature high-pressure air decks for precisely these reasons.

How Do You Pack an Inflatable Boat for a 4WD Trip?

Properly packing your boat and motor is critical for protecting your investment and ensuring a hassle-free setup at your destination. Throwing it all in the back of the ute is a recipe for disaster.

The Rooftop vs. The Canopy/Tub

Your two main options for the boat itself are on the roof rack or in the ute tub/canopy.

Rooftop Packing: This is the most popular method as it frees up valuable tray space.

  1. Invest in a proper bag. This is not optional. A high-quality, heavy-duty boat bag is your first line of defence against UV damage, stone chips, and, most importantly, dust. Our Australian-made Aerowave Heavy-Duty Boat Bag ($299) is built from tear-resistant canvas with robust zips and webbing, designed specifically for the rigours of Aussie touring.
  2. Position it correctly. Place the bag on your roof rack, ideally on a flat platform or between two crossbars. Ensure the weight is distributed evenly.
  3. Secure it properly. Use high-quality cam-buckle straps. Avoid ratchet straps, as it's easy to overtighten them and damage the bag or the boat inside. Use at least two straps across the width and consider one lengthwise if your setup allows. Check your straps every morning and after any rough sections of track.

Canopy/Tub Packing: If you have the space, this is a great option. It keeps the centre of gravity lower and protects the boat from the elements. The key here is preventing chafe. The vibrations from corrugated roads will cause anything touching your boat bag to slowly wear a hole in it. Lay down a piece of old marine carpet or heavy-duty rubber matting first. Ensure no sharp corners from toolboxes or fridge slides are pressing against it.

Packing the Outboard Motor

Transporting a modern 4-stroke outboard like a Hidea requires specific care to prevent oil from draining into the wrong parts of the engine.

  • Orientation is everything. Every 4-stroke outboard has a specific side it is designed to be laid on for transport. This is usually indicated by a small graphic or studs on the engine cowl. Get this wrong, and you risk oil seeping past the piston rings into the combustion chamber, resulting in a mess and a motor that won't start.
  • Secure it firmly. A dedicated outboard trolley that can be laid down is ideal. If not, build a simple padded cradle out of plywood and marine carpet. The goal is to stop it from sliding and bouncing around. Never just lay it on a steel ute tray.
  • Fuel management. Use a separate, dedicated jerry can for your 2-stroke oil and premium unleaded petrol. Don't risk contaminating your 4WD's diesel tank. Carry a small, portable fuel tank (12L or 24L) for the boat itself. Ensure all fuel caps and vents are sealed tight to prevent fumes from building up in your canopy.

Your Essential 4WD Boating Kit Checklist

  • Boat & Floor: Packed securely in a heavy-duty bag.
  • Outboard Motor: Secured in the correct orientation.
  • Seats & Oars: Often pack in the same bag as the boat.
  • High-Pressure Electric Pump: A 12V pump that connects to your car battery is a game-changer. Set the PSI and let it do the work.
  • Manual Pump: As a backup.
  • Transom Wheels: Non-negotiable for launching without a ramp.
  • PFDs (Life Jackets): One for every person, every time.
  • Anchor Kit: A small grapnel or sand anchor with at least 20 metres of rope and a length of chain.
  • Safety Gear: In a waterproof bag or a bow bag like the Aerowave Viper Sovereign ($250). Includes: V-sheet, flares, torch, first-aid kit, and a handheld VHF radio or PLB for remote areas.
  • Remote Area Repair Kit: (See detailed section below).
  • Fuel Tank & Line: A 12L or 24L tank is usually sufficient for a day's exploring.

How to Protect Your Boat from Dust, Heat, and Corrugations

The Australian bush is a harsh environment for any gear, and your inflatable boat is no exception. Three main enemies will try to destroy it: dust, heat, and vibration.

  • Dust: The fine, red dust of the outback is incredibly abrasive. It will work its way into improperly sealed bags and act like sandpaper on the fabric. It can also contaminate the internal workings of your valves, causing slow leaks. A top-quality, well-sealed bag isn't a luxury; it's essential insurance.

  • Heat & UV: Never, ever leave your boat fully inflated and sitting on the land in the hot midday sun. The air inside the tubes will heat up and expand, dramatically increasing the pressure. This can strain the seams to their breaking point. If you need to leave it out, let at least a third of the air out of all chambers. While premium VALMEX fabric has excellent UV resistance and a design life of 10-12 years, unnecessary exposure will shorten its lifespan. A set of custom-fitted Aerowave Tube Chaps ($1,000) can provide the ultimate protection from sun, fish hooks, and general wear and tear.

  • Corrugations & Vibration: Chafe is the silent killer on corrugated roads. The constant, high-frequency vibration will wear through anything that's rubbing. Ensure your boat bag is not rubbing on a sharp edge of your roof rack. Add foam or rubber padding where necessary. Double-check that your outboard is securely mounted and not bouncing against other items in your ute tray.

How Do You Launch a 4WD Inflatable Boat Without a Ramp?

This is where the magic happens. Your ability to launch from virtually any beach, riverbank, or creek edge is what sets this setup apart.

Beach Launching

  1. Assemble on firm ground. Find a spot on the upper beach or in the dunes to roll out and inflate your boat. Trying to do this on soft, wet sand is a pain.
  2. Use an electric pump. Connect your 12V pump to your car battery. Inflate the main tubes first, then the air deck floor. It should take 10-15 minutes.
  3. Attach transom wheels. With the boat still upside down or on its side, attach your transom wheels. These are small, retractable wheels that mount to the transom (the solid backboard where the motor goes).
  4. Flip, fit, and load. Flip the boat upright onto its wheels. Attach the outboard motor, connect the fuel line, and load your gear (eskies, fishing rods, safety kit).
  5. Wheel it to the water. Now, you can simply walk the boat down the beach and into the water like a wheelbarrow. Once it's floating, retract or remove the wheels, start the engine, and you're away. The entire process is a simple one or two-person job.

Riverbank and Creek Launching

The principle is the same, but scouting your location is key. Look for a spot with a relatively gentle slope and minimal sharp rocks or oyster shells. The shallow draft of an inflatable catamaran is a huge advantage here, as you only need a few inches of water to float the boat. Transom wheels are just as essential here as they are on the beach. You can easily assemble 20 metres back from a muddy bank and wheel the fully loaded boat right into the water, keeping your feet and your vehicle clean.

Your Remote Area 'Bush Mechanic' Repair Kit

Every Easy Inflatables boat comes with a basic patch kit, but for remote travel, you need to be prepared for more significant issues. Here's what to add to create a truly comprehensive 4WD inflatable boat repair kit.

  • Extra PVC/Hypalon Glue: Your standard kit has a small tube. Carry a larger, fresh, two-part adhesive designed for your boat's fabric. Store it in a cool, dark place.
  • Acetone or MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone): Crucial for properly preparing a surface for patching. Wiping the area with this solvent first cleans off grime and slightly softens the PVC, allowing the glue to get a much stronger chemical bond.
  • Tear-Aid Type B Patches: This stuff is magic. It's a peel-and-stick transparent patch that works instantly and requires no glue. It's perfect for a quick, get-you-home fix on a tear or puncture. It's a must-have.
  • Extra Patch Material: Ask for a few extra offcuts of your boat's material when you buy it. For a Viper, this would be the 1.2mm VALMEX fabric. Having a larger piece allows you to fix a more substantial tear.
  • Valve Wrench: The tool to tighten or replace a valve. Keep it handy.
  • Spare Inflation Valve: Valves can be damaged or fail. Carrying a complete spare is cheap insurance.
  • Soapy Water Spray Bottle: The quickest and easiest way to find a slow leak. Spray it on a suspect area and look for bubbles.
  • Assorted Zip Ties & Quality Duct Tape: For temporarily fixing or securing anything that breaks.
  • Pliers-based Multitool: For cutting, tightening, and general tinkering.

The Bottom Line

A 4WD opens up the country, but a premium inflatable boat unlocks its waterways. Itโ€™s not about finding a boat that's 'good enough' for touring; it's about choosing a vessel that actively enhances the experience. The packability, lightweight nature, incredible stability, and fuel efficiency of a modern inflatable catamaran like an Aerowave AeroCat or Viper make it the most logical, capable, and exciting addition you can make to your 4WD setup. It transforms your rig from a simple tourer into a go-anywhere base camp for fishing, diving, and exploration.

Is this really an Australian product?
Yes โ€” Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
What do I pay, and what is not included?
The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
How do I pay safely?
Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ€” transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
Is the warranty real outside Australia?
Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
Is the boat actually certified?
All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ€” ask and we will send it before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put an inflatable boat on a roof rack?
Absolutely. This is the most common way to transport a 4WD inflatable boat. It's essential to use a high-quality, heavy-duty boat bag to protect it from UV, dust, and road debris. Secure it with quality cam-buckle straps to a suitable roof rack platform or crossbars.
How heavy is a 4WD inflatable boat setup?
A typical 3.8 to 4.0 metre inflatable catamaran weighs between 55kg and 75kg. A suitable 15-20HP 4-stroke outboard, like a Hidea, weighs around 45-55kg. The total weight is far less than a traditional tinny and trailer, making it ideal for 4WD touring.
How long does it take to set up an inflatable boat?
With practice and a good 12V electric pump, you can go from a packed bag to fully inflated and ready for the motor in about 15-20 minutes. The first few times might take a little longer, but it quickly becomes a very slick and easy process.
Are inflatable boats tough enough for Australian conditions?
Premium inflatable boats made from high-quality German VALMEX or similar PVC fabrics are extremely tough and durable. Our Aerowave Viper series uses 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm fabric, which is highly resistant to abrasion and puncture. They are far more suited to remote travel than cheap, budget imports, which use thin materials and poor construction.
What size outboard do I need for a 4WD inflatable boat?
For a 3.3m to 4.5m inflatable, a 9.9HP to 25HP 4-stroke outboard is the ideal range. A 15HP or 20HP engine provides an excellent balance of power, weight, and fuel economy for a fully loaded boat, perfect for general touring and fishing.
What's better for remote fishing, a tinny or an inflatable catamaran?
For 4WD-based remote fishing, an inflatable catamaran is superior. Its unmatched stability provides a safe casting platform, its shallow draft lets you access creeks tinnies can't, it's silent on the water, and most importantly, it packs away without needing a trailer, allowing your 4WD to access more remote launch spots.
How do I clean my boat after a trip in saltwater and dust?
Always give your boat a thorough rinse with fresh water as soon as possible, paying close attention to the valves and the transom area. Use a mild, non-detergent soap if needed. Allow it to dry completely before packing it away for storage to prevent mould and mildew.
