Most outboards that die early in Australia are not worn out. They are salt-damaged, fuel-damaged, or never got their first service. A four-stroke that gets flushed, fuelled sensibly and serviced on schedule will outlast the boat it is bolted to.

Here is the schedule, what it costs, and the jobs worth doing yourself.

The service schedule

As a general guide for a recreational four-stroke outboard, and always check your own owner manual first:

WhenWhat happens
First service โ€” around 20 hours or 3 months, whichever comes firstEngine oil and filter, gearbox oil, valve clearance check, general inspection. This one is not optional.
Every 100 hours or every 12 monthsEngine oil and filter, gearbox oil, spark plugs, fuel filter, anode inspection, impeller check, throttle and shift adjustment.
Every 2 to 3 yearsWater-pump impeller replacement (sooner if you launch in sandy or silty water).
Every tripFreshwater flush, visual check of the anode and the prop.

The first service matters more than anything else on this list. A new four-stroke beds its rings in during those first hours and the oil picks up the debris from it. Leave that oil in and you carry the grit for the life of the engine.

What outboard servicing costs in Australia

Typical marine-workshop pricing for a small to mid-size four-stroke, as a planning range rather than a quote:

  • First / minor service (oil, filter, gear oil, inspection): roughly A$200 to A$350
  • Annual or 100-hour service: roughly A$300 to A$450
  • Impeller replacement: usually A$150 to A$300 on top, depending on the model
  • Remote and regional areas: expect more, mostly in travel and labour

Prices vary by state, engine size and workshop. Ring two local marine mechanics before you book โ€” the spread is wider than most people expect.

The five-minute habits that prevent most failures

Flush after every single salt-water trip. Muffs on the intakes, fresh water, five minutes at idle. This one habit prevents more expensive damage than everything else combined.

Do not leave stale fuel in it. Ethanol-blended petrol absorbs moisture and goes off in weeks, not months. If the boat is going to sit, run the carburettor dry or use a stabiliser. Fuel-injected engines are less fussy but not immune.

Check the anode. It is a sacrificial lump of metal doing its job by corroding. When it is half gone, replace it โ€” it is the cheapest part on the motor and the one protecting everything expensive.

Look at the tell-tale. No water squirting out means stop the engine now. Running a water-cooled outboard without cooling flow will cook it in minutes.

Check the prop and split pin before you launch. A dinged prop vibrates, and vibration loosens everything else.

Oil โ€” get this one right

Four-stroke outboards take four-stroke outboard oil, not car oil and never a two-stroke premix. We supply fully synthetic four-stroke outboard oil for first start-up and run-in with every home-delivered engine, because the first fill is the one people most often get wrong.

Warranty and parts

Every outboard we sell carries a 5-year (3 + 2) warranty with Australian parts support out of Melbourne. Keep your service records โ€” a stamped or invoiced service history is what makes a warranty claim straightforward rather than an argument. Any competent marine mechanic can carry out the servicing; you do not have to return the motor to us.

Storing the boat and motor over winter

  • Flush, then run the fuel system out or stabilise it
  • Change the engine oil before storage, not after โ€” used oil is acidic and sitting in a sump all winter is what pits bearings
  • Store the motor upright, or on the manufacturer-specified side
  • Grease the prop shaft and steering points
  • If the boat is an inflatable, deflate it slightly rather than storing it rock hard, and store it dry โ€” the full routine is in our inflatable boat care guide

When to call a mechanic straight away

  • No water from the tell-tale
  • Any oil-pressure or temperature alarm
  • Water in the gearbox oil (it looks like a milky coffee)
  • Hard starting that gets worse week to week
  • Vibration you have not felt before

Everything else can usually wait for the next scheduled service. If you are choosing a new engine and want one that is easy to live with, our outboard range runs from a 27 kg 6 HP to a 30 HP EFI, all on the same warranty and parts support.

Who am I actually buying from?
Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent โ€” a real person answers.
Is this really an Australian product?
Yes โ€” Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
What do I pay, and what is not included?
The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
How do I pay safely?
Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ€” transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
Is the warranty real outside Australia?
Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
Is the boat actually certified?
All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ€” ask and we will send it before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How often should an outboard be serviced?
A first service at about 20 hours or 3 months, then every 100 hours or every 12 months, whichever comes first. Check your owner manual for your specific engine.
What does an outboard service cost in Australia?
As a planning range, roughly A$200 to A$350 for a first or minor service and A$300 to A$450 for an annual or 100-hour service on a small to mid-size four-stroke. Impellers usually add A$150 to A$300.
Can I service my own outboard without voiding the warranty?
Basic maintenance is fine, but keep records and use the correct parts and oils. Scheduled services carried out by any competent marine mechanic keep your warranty intact โ€” keep the invoices.
Do I really need to flush the motor after every salt-water trip?
Yes. Five minutes on the muffs after each salt trip prevents more expensive damage than any other single habit.
How often should the impeller be replaced?
Every two to three years for typical recreational use, and sooner if you launch in sandy or silty water.
What oil does a four-stroke outboard use?
Purpose-made four-stroke outboard oil. Never a two-stroke premix, and car oil is not a substitute.
What warranty do your outboards carry?
A 5-year (3 + 2) warranty with Australian parts support from Melbourne.
