Choosing an inflatable boat means comparing fabric names and numbers: VALMEXยฎ, Hypalon, PVC, GSM and millimetres. In Australia โ with intense UV, high temperatures, salt and abrasive beaches โ it pays to understand exactly what you're buying.
Here's a practical comparison of VALMEXยฎ, ORCA Hypalon (CSM) and budget PVC: where each excels, what to watch for, and how to choose for the way you store and use your boat.
What is VALMEXยฎ?
VALMEXยฎ is a range of coated technical fabrics made by the German manufacturer Mehler. For inflatable boats it's a PVC-coated polyester fabric: a woven polyester base provides strength, while PVC coatings make it airtight and protect it from water and wear.
Easy Inflatables uses two grades:
- VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus โ 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm on the Viper Series, rated for a 10โ12 year service life. A heavy-duty, commercial-grade fabric used on rescue boats and workboats.
- VALMEXยฎ โ 1100 GSM / 0.9 mm on the lighter AeroCat Series, chosen for easy carrying and quick launching.
Both are a very different proposition from thin, unbranded entry-level PVC. You can read the full details and our VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus technical sheet on the fabrics page.

What is Hypalon, and is it the same as ORCA?
"Hypalon" is the name many boaters use for inflatable fabric with a CSM (chlorosulfonated polyethylene) coating. The original Hypalon-brand material is no longer made, so the name is now used informally. ORCA is a current brand of engineered fabric using CSM and chloroprene rubber coatings over a polyester base.
ORCA is designed for marine use where UV, weather and salt exposure matter. Grades differ in weight and construction, so check the specific grade rather than assuming every "Hypalon" fabric performs the same. Aerowave boats can be ordered with an ORCA Hypalon hull upgrade.

VALMEXยฎ vs Hypalon vs budget PVC: a practical comparison
| Factor | VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus PVC | ORCA CSM / "Hypalon" | Budget or thinner PVC |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV and heat | Strong for a premium PVC; best with shade and sensible storage | The strongest choice for long-term, unprotected sun and weather | Less margin against prolonged UV and heat |
| Abrasion | Heavy coating and robust build suit regular beach and ramp use | Tough marine fabric; depends on grade, design and protection | Wears faster under hard, repeated use |
| Weight | Substantial, heavy-duty fabric | Varies by ORCA grade | Often lighter, with less material |
| Seams | Ideal for heat-welded construction | Joined with adhesive processes | Often welded, depending on the maker |
| Repair | Compatible PVC materials and methods | Compatible CSM/CR materials and careful preparation | Depends on the exact fabric and its age |
| Cost | Premium PVC; strong value | Higher initial material and repair cost | Lowest purchase price |
| Best fit | Durable PVC and great value, with sensible storage | Boats left outdoors in tough sun and weather | Light, occasional use where price leads |
Treat this as a general guide โ exact grades, finishes and construction make a difference.
Which fabric handles Australian sun best?
For maximum UV and weathering resistance, CSM/ORCA has the strongest reputation. That makes it appealing if your boat spends long periods uncovered on a deck, mooring or marina berth, particularly in northern or tropical conditions.
VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus is an excellent fit for Australia too. It's a quality PVC fabric with documented light fastness and robust mechanical properties, and it shines on boats that are covered or stored out of the sun between trips โ which is how most trailer-free inflatable owners use them.
Care makes a big difference with either fabric. A cover, shade, regular rinsing and sensible storage all help, as does following the manufacturer's inflation instructions. An automatic over-pressurisation valve on every chamber manages pressure as the air heats up.
Why cheap, thin PVC struggles
Thin PVC can suit a lightweight tender that's used occasionally and stored carefully. But low-cost PVC with less coating and a lighter base fabric has less material to withstand years of sun, rubbing and frequent handling.
Australian heat and UV accelerate ageing in vulnerable PVC. Over time it can lose flexibility, harden, and develop cracks or surface wear โ and aged fabric is harder to repair. That's why a low price or a thickness figure alone shouldn't decide the purchase.
Look at the whole specification: fabric maker and grade, GSM and thickness together, coating, seam construction, warranty and storage advice. "0.9 mm" alone doesn't tell you whether it's branded VALMEXยฎ or an unbranded fabric. Read 0.9 mm vs 1.2 mm: What Hull Fabric Really Buys You and Why a 1.2 mm Hull.
Abrasion, weight and repairs: the trade-offs
Abrasion resistance depends on the fabric grade and boat design as well as how you use the boat. Dragging tubes across concrete, sharp rock or shells can damage any material, so rubbing strips, reinforced areas and launching wheels are worth having if beach launching is part of your routine.
Weight is grade-specific. A heavier fabric adds durability and some weight to the finished boat, so ask about the actual material grade rather than the broad labels "PVC" and "Hypalon".
Repairs need compatible patch materials and adhesives, and correct preparation matters for both. CSM repairs take more specialist knowledge. A small repair is manageable with the right kit; seam damage or a large tear is a job for an experienced repairer. See our repairs and patching guide.

Which should you choose?
Choose ORCA Hypalon if maximum resistance to long-term sun and weather is your priority, especially if the boat will live outdoors, and you're comfortable paying more upfront.
Choose VALMEXยฎ Heavy Plus if you want a substantial, premium fabric with a strong balance of durability and value โ particularly if you cover the boat or store it out of the sun. It's a world away from thin, entry-level PVC.
Choose 0.9 mm VALMEXยฎ if light weight and easy carrying matter most โ the AeroCat range is built around it.
A well-made boat that's properly cared for will serve you better than a higher-spec fabric left exposed and neglected. Compare the exact fabric grade, seam method, warranty and care requirements, not just the headline material name.

Frequently asked questions
- Is VALMEX better than Hypalon?
- They suit different owners. ORCA Hypalon has the strongest reputation for long-term unprotected sun exposure; VALMEX Heavy Plus is a premium PVC with an excellent balance of durability and value, especially when covered between trips.
- What is VALMEX fabric?
- VALMEX is a range of German technical fabrics made by Mehler. For inflatable boats it's PVC-coated polyester โ a woven polyester base for strength with PVC coatings for airtightness and wear protection.
- How long does VALMEX Heavy Plus last?
- Aerowave's 1500 GSM / 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus hulls are rated for a 10โ12 year service life with sensible care and storage.
- Is Hypalon still made?
- The original Hypalon-brand material is no longer made. 'Hypalon' is now used informally for CSM-coated fabrics such as ORCA.
- Is 0.9 mm PVC good enough for an inflatable boat?
- Branded 0.9 mm VALMEX (about 1,100 GSM) suits lightweight boats like the AeroCat range. Thin, unbranded budget PVC has less material to withstand years of sun and wear, so check the full specification.
- Can Aerowave boats be built in Hypalon?
- Yes, Aerowave boats can be ordered with an ORCA Hypalon hull upgrade. Call Gary on +61 2 4335 1603 to discuss which fabric suits you.
- How do I protect an inflatable boat from UV?
- Cover it or store it in the shade, rinse after use, and check the manufacturer's guidance before using any UV protectant.
