Read owner storiesA 15 hp outboard is the point where an inflatable stops being a pottering boat and starts being transport. Three adults, an esky and safety gear, and a 15 HP will still get a 3.6 m to 4.0 m hull onto the plane and hold it into a headwind. A 9.9 will not always do that.
The trade is weight. You are going from roughly 42 kg to 53 kg, and that changes how the motor gets from the garage to the water.
What a 15 HP suits
- 3.6 m to 4.0 m inflatable catamarans carrying two to four people
- Inflatable monohulls and larger tenders used in open estuaries and coastal bays
- Anyone who loads the boat heavily: fishing gear, dive tanks, camping kit
- Boats that need to punch against tide and wind rather than drift with it
If you regularly boat solo in protected water, 15 HP is more motor than you need. If you load up, run distances, or carry passengers, it is the size most owners settle on and stay with.
15 HP specifications that matter
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Engine | Twin-cylinder 4-stroke, 323 cc |
| Power | 15 HP (11 kW) |
| Dry weight | 53.4 kg short shaft / 54.4 kg long shaft |
| Shaft | Short 15" or Long 20" |
| Start | Manual recoil, or electric with built-in lithium battery |
| Fuel use | 7.0 L/h at 5500 rpm (wide open) |
| Tank | 12 L external included (24 L available) |
| Warranty | 5-year (3 + 2) |
That 7.0 L/h figure is at full throttle. At a sensible cruise you will use far less, but it is the honest number to plan a long run around.
15 hp outboard prices in Australia (2026)
| Configuration | Price |
|---|---|
| Short shaft, manual start | A$4,244 |
| Short shaft, electric start | A$4,250 |
| Long shaft, manual or electric start | A$4,350 |
Delivery is flat-rate to capital cities and quoted before you pay. Remote and island destinations are quoted on application.
The built-in lithium electric start is worth noting: there is no separate battery box to find room for in a small inflatable, which is exactly the problem most people hit when they add electric start to a boat this size.
Weight, and how to handle it
53 kg is a two-person lift or a motor-trolley job. Practical ways owners manage it:
- Leave the motor on the transom and move the boat on launching wheels
- Use a motor stand in the garage and wheel the boat to the engine
- Fit the engine at the ramp with a second person, not on the sand alone
Do not let the weight talk you out of the right horsepower if you genuinely carry loads โ an underpowered boat that will not plane with four people aboard is the worse outcome.
Shaft length and transom height
Most inflatable catamarans need the 20" long shaft. Small monohull inflatables and tenders usually take the 15" short shaft. Measure from the top of the transom board to the bottom of the hull and match it. If the prop is running too shallow you will get ventilation in chop โ the engine revs, the boat does not accelerate. We explain the fix in outboard cavitation and transom height.
15 HP vs 20 HP
A 20 HP EFI adds fuel injection, instant starting and more top end for roughly 6 kg more weight. If you are running a 3.8 m or 4.0 m hull hard, or you hate cold-start fiddling, the EFI is the better long-term buy. If you want the lightest engine that will still plane a loaded boat, 15 HP is it.
For the hull side of the decision, every boat in our range lists its maximum rated horsepower โ never exceed it, and remember that the rating is a limit, not a target.

- Who am I actually buying from?
- Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent โ a real person answers.
- Is this really an Australian product?
- Yes โ Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
- What do I pay, and what is not included?
- The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
- How do I pay safely?
- Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
- What if it arrives damaged?
- Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
- Is the warranty real outside Australia?
- Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
- Is the boat actually certified?
- All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ ask and we will send it before you order.
Frequently asked questions
- What size inflatable suits a 15 HP outboard?
- Inflatable catamarans and monohulls from about 3.6 m to 4.0 m carrying two to four people, especially when loaded with fishing or camping gear.
- How heavy is a 15 HP outboard?
- 53.4 kg short shaft and 54.4 kg long shaft on our 323 cc twin-cylinder four-stroke. Plan on a two-person lift or a motor trolley.
- How much fuel does a 15 HP use?
- 7.0 L/h at 5500 rpm wide open throttle. At normal cruising revs consumption is considerably lower.
- What does a 15 hp outboard cost in Australia?
- From A$4,244 short shaft manual, A$4,250 short shaft electric start and A$4,350 long shaft, with a 12 L tank included.
- Does the electric start need a separate battery?
- No. The electric-start models use a built-in lithium battery, so there is no battery box taking up space in the boat.
- Is 15 HP or 20 HP better for a 3.8 m catamaran?
- 15 HP is the lighter option that will still plane a loaded boat. 20 HP EFI adds fuel injection, easier starting and more top end for about 6 kg more.
- What warranty comes with it?
- 5-year (3 + 2) warranty with Melbourne-based Australian parts support.
