A 6 hp boat motor is the smallest engine most Australian owners are genuinely happy with. It weighs about 27 kg, one person can lift it off a transom and carry it to the car, and it will push a loaded 2.7 m to 3.3 m inflatable or tender at a comfortable planing-ish pace with two adults aboard. Below 6 HP you are buying a get-home motor. Above it you are buying speed you may not need.

That is the whole decision in one paragraph, but the detail matters โ€” because the difference between a short shaft and a long shaft, or manual and electric start, changes both the price and whether the motor suits your boat at all.

What size boat does a 6 hp outboard suit?

A 6 HP four-stroke is the right match for:

  • Yacht tenders and dinghies from 2.3 m to 2.9 m, including our Swift Tender range
  • Small inflatable catamarans and monohulls around 3.0 m to 3.3 m with one or two people aboard
  • Dam, river and estuary use where you want quiet, economical running rather than outright speed

With two adults and gear in a 3.3 m inflatable, a 6 HP will move you along at a steady, useful pace and hold position against light current. Add a third adult, a full esky and a headwind and you will start wishing for a 9.9 HP.

What does a 6 hp boat motor weigh?

Our Hidea 6HP four-stroke is 27 kg short shaft and 28 kg long shaft โ€” a single-cylinder, 139 cc engine. That number is the reason so many people stop at 6 HP. It is the heaviest outboard an average person can comfortably lift alone, carry down a beach and mount on an inflatable transom without help.

By comparison a 9.9 HP is around 41โ€“43 kg and a 15 HP is 53โ€“54 kg. Those are two-person lifts or trolley jobs. If your boat lives in a garage and gets carried to the water, weight matters more than horsepower.

Short shaft or long shaft?

Shaft length must match your transom, not your preference.

  • Short shaft (15") โ€” most small tenders and many 3.0โ€“3.3 m inflatables
  • Long shaft (20") โ€” deeper transoms, catamarans with raised transoms, and any boat where the cavitation plate would otherwise sit too high

Get this wrong and the prop ventilates the moment you hit chop โ€” the engine screams, the boat stops pulling. We wrote a full explanation of that in outboard cavitation and transom height. If you are unsure, measure the transom from the top of the board to the bottom of the hull and call us before you order.

6 hp outboard price in Australia (2026)

Current pricing on our Hidea 6HP four-stroke:

ConfigurationPrice
Short shaft, manual startA$1,450
Long shaft, manual startA$1,705
Short shaft, electric start (lithium)A$2,000
Long shaft, electric start (lithium)A$2,100

All prices in Australian dollars. Delivery is flat-rate to capital cities and quoted before you pay; remote and island destinations are quoted on application because outboards travel as heavy palletised freight.

Every motor carries our 5-year (3 + 2) warranty with Melbourne parts support, which is the part most buyers of value-brand outboards never get.

Manual or electric start?

Manual recoil is lighter, simpler and has one less thing to go wrong. A 139 cc single-cylinder starts on one or two easy pulls when it is tuned and fuelled properly.

Choose electric start if you have a shoulder or back issue, if you start and stop repeatedly while fishing, or if you simply want the convenience. Our electric-start 6HP uses a built-in lithium battery, so you are not carrying a separate battery box around.

Fuel, oil and running costs

The 6HP runs a 1.1 L built-in tank plus the 12 L external tank included in the box. On the built-in tank alone you will get short runs around a bay; the external tank is what you use for a real day out.

It is a four-stroke, so it burns straight unleaded โ€” no premixing. It does need proper four-stroke outboard oil for the first start and run-in, and an oil change at the first-service interval. We cover the schedule and real costs in outboard motor servicing in Australia.

When to skip 6 HP

Step down to 5 HP only if the extra kilo or two genuinely matters and your boat is tiny.

Step up to 8 HP or 9.9 HP if you regularly carry three people, if you want to get on the plane with a load, or if you boat anywhere with current and wind โ€” which in most Australian estuaries means most of the time. The 9.9 is a twin-cylinder and notably smoother at cruise.

If you are still deciding which boat the motor goes on, start with our inflatable boat range โ€” hull length and transom height determine the sensible horsepower far more than personal preference does.

Who am I actually buying from?
Easy Inflatables, Avoca Beach NSW 2251, Australia. ABN 96 856 548 613. Sean is the owner and skipper, Gary Stewart handles sales on +61 2 4335 1603, Karen Matthews handles email. The boats are Australian designed; international orders ship from our Hong Kong dispatch hub so your landed price stays competitive. Phone us before you pay a cent โ€” a real person answers.
Is this really an Australian product?
Yes โ€” Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
What do I pay, and what is not included?
The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
How do I pay safely?
Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
What if it arrives damaged?
Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ€” transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
Is the warranty real outside Australia?
Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
Is the boat actually certified?
All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ€” ask and we will send it before you order.

Frequently asked questions

What size boat will a 6 hp outboard push?
A 6 HP four-stroke suits tenders and dinghies from about 2.3 m to 2.9 m and inflatables around 3.0 m to 3.3 m with one or two people aboard. With three adults and gear you will want 9.9 HP.
How much does a 6 hp boat motor weigh?
Our Hidea 6HP weighs 27 kg in short shaft and 28 kg in long shaft. That makes it the largest outboard most people can carry and mount on their own.
How much does a 6 hp outboard cost in Australia?
From A$1,450 for short shaft manual start, A$1,705 long shaft manual, and A$2,000 to A$2,100 for lithium electric start. Delivery is quoted before you pay.
Do I need a short shaft or long shaft 6 HP?
Match the shaft to your transom height. Short shaft (15 inch) suits most small tenders; long shaft (20 inch) suits deeper transoms and catamarans. The wrong shaft causes the prop to ventilate in chop.
Does a 6 hp four-stroke need premixed fuel?
No. Four-strokes run straight unleaded petrol with separate four-stroke outboard oil in the sump, changed at the service intervals.
Is a 6 HP outboard enough for fishing?
For estuary, dam and river fishing in a small inflatable or tender, yes. For open water, strong tides or three people aboard, step up to 9.9 HP or 15 HP.
What warranty comes with your outboards?
A 5-year (3 + 2) warranty with Australian parts support out of Melbourne.
