Read owner storiesIf you are searching for a 10 hp outboard in Australia, what you will actually be sold is a 9.9 HP. That is not a trick โ the 9.9 rating exists because several licensing and power-restriction rules around the world sit at the 10 HP line, so manufacturers build the engine to 9.9 HP. In the water there is no meaningful difference: a 9.9 HP four-stroke is the 10 hp outboard you are looking for.
Here is what it pushes, what it weighs and what it costs in 2026.
What a 9.9 HP outboard suits
This is the most popular size we sell, and for good reason. A 9.9 HP twin-cylinder four-stroke is the sweet spot for:
- 3.3 m to 3.8 m inflatable catamarans with two to three adults aboard
- Larger yacht tenders that need to plane with a load
- Small aluminium dinghies and fishing boats
- Anyone boating in tidal estuaries, where the ability to push against current is the safety margin
On a 3.6 m or 3.8 m catamaran hull, a 9.9 gets you onto the plane with two adults and gear, holds it comfortably, and still sips fuel. Step down to 6 HP and the same boat will plane solo but struggle loaded. Step up to 15 HP and you gain speed but add roughly 11 kg.
Weight โ the number that decides it
Our Hidea 9.9HP four-stroke is 41.6 kg short shaft, 43 kg long shaft, from a 212 cc twin-cylinder engine.
That is right at the edge of a one-person lift. Most owners can manage it onto a transom with care, a trolley, or a second pair of hands. If you will be carrying the motor across sand on your own regularly, be honest with yourself and look at 6 HP instead. If the motor mostly stays on the boat or on a motor stand in the garage, 9.9 is the better engine.
Twin-cylinder also matters. Two cylinders idle and cruise noticeably smoother than one, which is the difference between a pleasant three-hour session and a rattly one.
10 hp outboard price in Australia (2026)
| Configuration | Price |
|---|---|
| Short shaft, manual start | A$3,800 |
| Long shaft, manual start | A$3,950 |
| Short shaft, electric start | A$3,800 |
| Long shaft, electric start | A$3,950 |
A 12 L external tank, fuel line and fittings are included. Delivery is flat-rate to capital cities, quoted before you pay; remote and island addresses are quoted on application because outboards move as palletised freight.
Every engine carries the 5-year (3 + 2) warranty and Melbourne parts support.
Short or long shaft for a 9.9?
Measure the transom, do not guess:
- 15" (short) โ most small tenders and monohull inflatables
- 20" (long) โ deeper transoms and most inflatable catamarans
Our WaveRunner-series boats run a 380 mm transom specifically to keep more prop in the water and kill ventilation in chop. If your current boat has the engine screaming and the hull not pulling when you hit a wake, that is ventilation and it is almost always a shaft-height problem โ full explanation in outboard cavitation and transom height.
Electric start or recoil?
On a 212 cc twin, recoil starting is easy when the motor is healthy. Electric start earns its place if you stop and restart repeatedly through a fishing session, or you want the least physical setup possible. On our 9.9 the electric-start models are priced the same as manual, so the decision is purely practical.
Fuel and running costs
A 9.9 HP four-stroke at half throttle is one of the cheapest ways to spend a day on the water in Australia. Straight unleaded, no premix, and a 12 L tank covers a long session on an inflatable at cruising revs. Budget for an oil change at the first service and then annually or by hours โ see outboard servicing costs and schedule.
9.9 HP vs 15 HP vs 20 HP
- 9.9 HP โ best all-rounder for 3.3โ3.8 m inflatables, 41โ43 kg, easy to handle
- 15 HP โ real speed with three aboard, 53โ54 kg, still tiller-friendly
- 20 HP EFI โ fuel injection, instant starting, best for 3.8โ4.0 m hulls run hard
If you have not chosen the boat yet, decide the hull first. Our inflatable boat range lists the maximum rated horsepower for each model, and going over the rating is never worth it.

- Is this really an Australian product?
- Yes โ Australian designed and engineered on the NSW Central Coast. Manufacturing is done offshore to our spec, and international orders ship direct from our Hong Kong dispatch hub. If we routed every boat through Australia first, the freight alone would roughly double or triple your cost for the same hull.
- What do I pay, and what is not included?
- The delivery and import terms depend on your country. EU, UK, New Zealand and named Asia/Pacific lanes include duty and tax; US freight is free but US buyers pay import charges on arrival. Other destinations show their terms before payment.
- How do I pay safely?
- Card through Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or bank transfer. Card payments carry your bank's own dispute protection. We never ask for crypto, gift cards or payment to a personal account.
- What if it arrives damaged?
- Every boat ships fully tracked and insured door to door. Photograph the carton and the boat on arrival and email us โ transit damage is claimed and replaced through us, not left with you and the courier.
- Is the warranty real outside Australia?
- Yes. The 7-year hull warranty on 1.2 mm VALMEX Heavy Plus and Orca Hypalon hulls applies wherever you are. Replacement parts are held in Australia and at our overseas hub and go out by express courier to your door.
- Is the boat actually certified?
- All Aerowave catamarans are CE certified to ISO 6185-3 and EU Directive 2013/53/EU. Certification paperwork is supplied with the boat โ ask and we will send it before you order.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a 10 hp outboard the same as a 9.9 HP?
- Effectively yes. Engines are built to 9.9 HP because several power and licensing thresholds sit at 10 HP. On the water the performance is what buyers searching for a 10 hp outboard expect.
- What boats suit a 9.9 HP outboard?
- Inflatable catamarans and monohulls from about 3.3 m to 3.8 m, larger yacht tenders, and small aluminium dinghies, carrying two to three adults.
- How much does a 9.9 HP outboard weigh?
- 41.6 kg short shaft and 43 kg long shaft on our Hidea twin-cylinder 212 cc model.
- What does a 10 hp outboard cost in Australia?
- A$3,800 short shaft and A$3,950 long shaft in 2026, manual or electric start, with a 12 L tank and fittings included.
- Will a 9.9 HP plane an inflatable catamaran?
- Yes. On a 3.6 m or 3.8 m catamaran it will plane with two adults and gear and hold the plane comfortably.
- Should I choose short or long shaft?
- Measure your transom. Most inflatable catamarans take a 20 inch long shaft; small tenders and monohulls usually take a 15 inch short shaft.
- What warranty applies?
- A 5-year (3 + 2) warranty with Australian parts support from Melbourne.
